A large-scale personnel reshuffle is unfolding in Hungary. The country's new government, which came to power following the historic victory of the 'Tisza' party, has begun reorganizing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The central event has been a wave of dismissals of staff who worked in the ministry under the leadership of former minister Péter Szijjártó.

### 'Purge' or Institutional Reform?

An official statement was made by György Velky, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In his video address, he announced the start of an internal audit and structural restructuring of the ministry. As part of this process, a decision was made to initiate the termination of employment contracts with 45 civil servants.

Velky emphasized that this is not a total purge, but rather targeted action. Out of more than a thousand ministry employees, only a few dozen have been affected. The criterion for their removal was their direct involvement in the political management of the ministry during Szijjártó's tenure.

### Causes and Consequences for Diplomacy

The new leadership sees a direct link between the actions of the previous team and the deterioration of Hungary's international standing. According to Velky, the dismissed officials participated in processes that led to the loss of the country's reputation, the erosion of allies' trust, and distancing from the European Union.

"We met personally with every employee affected by this decision, looked them in the eye, and explained the reasons for our decision," the State Secretary noted. To date, 38 officials have accepted the offer to resign by mutual agreement.

### Personal Approach and New Goals

György Velky attempted to dispel accusations of repression, describing the situation as "correct and humane treatment." He stated that these measures are aimed at supporting those who suffered from the situation in the ministry in recent years — both sidelined diplomats and ordinary citizens.

The main goal of the new government has been declared to be the building of "trustworthy and reliable diplomacy." The authorities promise that foreign policy will serve the public good and the genuine interests of the Hungarian people.

### Political Context

These events are taking place against the backdrop of a change of power in the country. On April 12, parliamentary elections were held in Hungary, in which Viktor Orbán lost after a long period in power. On May 9, the new parliament elected Péter Magyar, the leader of the winning 'Tisza' party, as Prime Minister.

Interestingly, former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is not leaving politics. Reports indicate that he will continue his activities and receive a mandate in the new composition of the National Assembly, despite the fact that his team in the ministry has undergone significant rotation.
