Real Madrid has officially finalized the transfer deal for 24-year-old Ukrainian defender Max Shulga. The signing marks the fourth reinforcement for the Spanish giant in the current off-season and has sparked widespread resonance in the basketball world. Details of the transfer are reported by Sport RBC.UA, citing the authoritative publication Diario AS.

### Strategic Importance of the Transfer

Acquiring Shulga holds not just sporting but strictly regulatory significance for the "Whites." The Spanish Liga Endesa enforces strict limits on the number of foreign players, yet there is an exception for players developed in local academies. Since Max has been trained in Spanish basketball schools "Colegio Leones" and "Torrelodones" since the age of 11, he is legally considered a product of the national system.

This status allows Real Madrid to fulfill the mandatory quota for local players. The situation became critical following Usman Garuba's injury and Mario Hezonja's departure from the team. Shulga's transfer effectively unlocks the rotation for the Madrid squad in the domestic league, providing the coaching staff with necessary flexibility.

### From the USA to Madrid

The Ukrainian's career in the USA was bright and rapid. Starting his path at the University of Utah and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), he attracted the attention of NBA scouts. In 2025, Shulga was selected with the 57th pick in the draft. Last season, he operated on a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics, playing 11 games in the NBA regular season and 2 playoff matches.

However, he gained the bulk of his playing experience with the Maine Celtics in the G-League. There, his statistics were impressive: averaging 15.7 points and 6.7 assists per game. Furthermore, in the summer of 2026, Shulga won the NBA Summer League title while playing for the Golden State Warriors.

### Legal Obstacles and the Future

Despite his sporting readiness, the player must resolve a complex legal issue with FIBA to be officially registered in Europe. Currently, Max's transfer sheet is blocked due to a dispute with his former agency, Sigma SRL. The agency is demanding a payment of $180,000 for a canceled transfer to Villanova University.

Once these issues are resolved, Shulga will join the Madrid squad, where he will provide rotation depth at the point guard and shooting guard positions. He will strengthen the lineup alongside stars like Facundo Campazzo, Andres Feliz, and Sergio Llull. It was previously reported that Ukrainian national team center Dmytro Skapintsev also moved to Spain, making the Madrid club one of the main hubs for Ukrainian basketball talent in Europe.
