# Giorgia Meloni to propose a negotiator for Ukraine at the EU summit: who will become the mediator?

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni intends to nominate a special negotiator who will represent the interests of the European Union in the process of resolving the Russo-Ukrainian war. The official proposal will be announced at the upcoming summit of EU leaders, scheduled for June 18–19 in Brussels.

### Who does Meloni see for this position?

During a press conference following the G7 summit in France, the Italian leader revealed details of the future appointment. According to her, the European mediator should be a representative of a "medium-sized country," rather than one of the largest member states of the EU. In Meloni's opinion, this approach will ensure a more neutral and balanced position in negotiations.

### Agreement with Trump — but no guarantee

Meloni also reported that an agreement was reached with US President Donald Trump on issues concerning Ukraine at the G7 summit. However, she emphasized: "such mutual understanding cannot always be taken for granted." This indicates that even with a current agreement, the situation may change depending on the political climate.

### Diplomatic activation: hopes and doubts

Recently, Western leaders have intensified discussions on the diplomatic path to ending the war. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, following talks with Trump and G7 leaders, stated that there is now a "first chance for peace in Ukraine." The German Foreign Ministry suggested that peace talks could begin as early as this summer, as Russian leader Vladimir Putin is allegedly beginning to seriously consider this issue against the backdrop of a deadlock on the front lines.

However, Moscow's real readiness for dialogue remains highly questionable. French President Emmanuel Macron noted that Trump agreed with G7 leaders that Russia had no serious desire to negotiate, and all previous efforts by the US and the EU have been in vain.

### Secret contacts with the Kremlin

Meanwhile, it became known that the President of the European Council secretly contacted the Kremlin regarding Ukraine through his chief advisor, attempting to gauge the ground for possible Russian involvement in future dialogue. These steps indicate that Brussels continues to seek any channels to launch negotiations, even if they remain unofficial.

Thus, Meloni's proposal to appoint a special negotiator becomes part of a broader EU strategy to find a diplomatic way out of the crisis. Whether this initiative will remain merely a formality or become a real step towards peace remains to be seen.
