A major diplomatic meeting is being prepared in Berlin that could determine the future of European security. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to convene leaders of key EU countries to develop a unified strategy for engaging with the US administration. This initiative comes amid rising tensions between Washington and its NATO allies.

### Berlin Summit of the "Five"

According to sources, a closed-door meeting of the heads of state of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland may take place in the German capital at the end of June. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has also been invited to participate in the negotiations. The main goal of this summit is to consolidate Europe's position in the face of new demands from Donald Trump and prevent a rift within the Alliance.

Participants intend to prepare a specific package of steps that will demonstrate European countries' readiness to take on greater responsibility for the defense of the continent. This is a direct response to criticism from Washington, which has repeatedly pointed out the insufficient defense spending of its partners.

### Escalation of Conflict with Iran

Consultations are taking place against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between the US and Europe, triggered by the military campaign against Iran. European leaders, who were not involved by the White House in decision-making, largely refused to support the operation. This provoked a sharp reaction in Washington.

Particular tension has arisen personally between Chancellor Merz and President Trump. The German leader criticized the actions of the US administration, stating that American negotiators are being subjected to "humiliation" by their Iranian counterparts. In response, Trump announced the withdrawal of more than 5,000 US troops from Germany, which sent a serious signal to all of Europe.

### Shift in Security Paradigm

According to the magazine Spiegel, the US plans to radically reduce its military contribution to NATO. Washington aims to shift a significant portion of the responsibility for Europe's defense onto the shoulders of European allies. In NATO, such changes are called a potential "turning point" that will force European countries to accelerate the buildup of their own military capabilities.

The newspaper Welt am Sonntag notes that the United States may begin to scale back part of its military presence in Europe faster than allies expected. According to the publication, Washington does not plan a long transition period and aims to move as quickly as possible to a model where European states bear the main responsibility for the conventional defense of the continent.

### Preparation for the Ankara Summit

Parallel to political consultations, a meeting of the defense ministers of the "Five" countries will take place in Paris on June 12. This event will be part of the preparation for the NATO summit, which will be held on July 7–8 in Ankara. The negotiations are planned to discuss the coordination of defense policy and possible changes in the command system in case of further escalation of the situation.

Despite the tough statements from the Trump administration, NATO does not see a crisis in relations with Washington. The Chairman of the Alliance's Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, stated that allies are already increasing defense spending and moving towards meeting new NATO goals, in particular by bringing defense spending to 5% of GDP.
