# Miracle on Cozumel Island: Dwarf Fox, Thought Extinct, Found Alive

![Dwarf fox, once thought extinct, found alive on Cozumel Island — rare species in its natural habitat](https://xab.info/media/2026/06/09/kosumelskaya-lisitsa-naydena-zhivoy/kosumelskaya-lisitsa-naydena-zhivoy-1.webp)

In the world of biology, an event has occurred that can be called a true scientific triumph. For the first time in the last two decades, scientists have obtained irrefutable photographic evidence of the existence of the Cozumel fox — a rare species inhabiting the Mexican island of Cozumel. This discovery confirms that the unique species, which many experts had already written off as extinct, continues to live.

### The Case That Changed Everything

The story of saving this species began in September 2023, when local residents found a disoriented animal on the side of the highway. Realizing that they were not just looking at an ordinary wild fox, they immediately reported it to the nature park staff. The specialists' reaction was instant: researchers and ecologists arrived on the scene to help the animal.

It turned out to be an adult male Cozumel fox. Ecologists provided him with the necessary assistance and, most importantly, took the first confirmed photographs of a living specimen in 20 years. After several days of observation and recovery, the fox was successfully released into the Laguna Colombia State Reserve.

### A Unique Example of Evolution

Why did this discovery cause such a stir in the scientific community? The Cozumel fox was last seen in the distant year 2001. Since then, scientists have feared that the species has completely disappeared from the face of the Earth. This species is a unique example of evolution, known as insular dwarfism. Due to isolation on the island, the foxes became significantly smaller than their mainland relatives — the gray foxes. They lived on Cozumel for thousands of years, developing in unique conditions.

### Threats Looming Over the Species

Despite the joy of the discovery, researchers who published the results in the journal Neotropical Biology and Conservation are sounding the alarm. The foxes' habitat on the southern part of the island is shrinking rapidly. The main threats include human activity, frequent hurricanes, and invasive (introduced) animal species that disrupt the fragile ecological balance.

Scientists are calling for the immediate start of population monitoring and the adoption of measures to protect the island's wildlife. The discovery of the Cozumel fox is not just a scientific sensation, but also a signal that the time for action has already been missed, and it is necessary to act quickly to preserve this unique species for future generations.
