# Mobilization 50+: Where older men serve and how deferment works

Amidst the ongoing mobilization in Ukraine, special attention is being paid to the conscription of citizens in older age categories. Lawyers and representatives of Territorial Recruitment and Resource Centers (TRRC) clarify: being 50+, 55+, or even 59 years old is not an automatic ground for exemption from service. Conscription on general terms applies to all military personnel, although the practice of deploying such servicemen has its own specific features.

### Where do men over 50 serve?

The decision to deploy a citizen of an older age to the troops is made individually. The leadership of the TRRC and the command of units strive to use the experience and skills of such people as effectively as possible. As a rule, men over 50 are not sent to the front line or to assault units. Instead, they are most often assigned to rear structures: repair brigades, logistics centers, and material and technical support units.

Here, civilian experience — driving tenure, engineering knowledge, and the ability to organize processes — brings real benefit to the army. Nevertheless, there is no single rigid rule: the place of service is determined taking into account physical condition, professional skills, and the current needs of the armed forces.

### Deferment and exemption: the same rules as for everyone

The procedure for obtaining a deferment or full exemption from military service for the 50+ and 55+ categories is identical to the rules for other military personnel. Official deferment is guaranteed in the presence of medical indications, family circumstances, or other legal grounds provided by legislation.

### Age limit and the "60+" contract

The maximum age for military service in Ukraine is 60 years. After reaching this milestone, servicemen are subject to mandatory dismissal to the reserve, even if they were mobilized at 59. However, for those who have reached 60 but maintain good health and wish to continue serving, a separate "60+" contract is provided. It can be concluded for a term of one year after passing the military-medical commission (MMC) again.

### Changes in the mobilization system

The beginning of summer will not bring instant changes to the current mobilization procedure. In June, the same norms and grounds for deferment will apply. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is preparing a two-stage reform of the recruitment system. The first stage will start directly in June and will concern the update of the financial support system for servicemen.

Also, at the beginning of the month, the official presentation of the updated version of the "Reserve+" mobile application is planned. The new version should significantly expand digital capabilities for military personnel and make interaction with the state simpler and more transparent.

### What military personnel 50+ need to know

The mobilization of citizens over the age of 50 continues. Experienced older men are becoming a reliable foundation for rear support and army logistics. For military personnel of this category, it is critically important to:

- timely update their data in the "Reserve+" system;

- undergo medical commissions if necessary;

- properly document deferment requests through available services if there are legal grounds.

Thus, while age itself does not exempt one from service, it influences the distribution and conditions of duty. The state continues to adapt the mobilization system to the real needs of the army and the capabilities of citizens.
