# Mobilization for 50+: What Changes on June 1 and Where You’ll Be Sent to Serve

As of June 1, 2026, Ukraine does not expect radical changes in mobilization rules, but the topic of conscripting men over 50 remains one of the most discussed. Martial law has been extended until August 2, 2026, meaning all military-age citizens from 18 to 60 — including those aged 50, 55, or even 59 — remain under the attention of Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCR).

### Age Is Not a Guarantee of Exemption

Many mistakenly believe that after age 50, the issue of conscription can be “closed.” In reality, the law makes no exceptions: if a person has no deferment, exemption, or medical contraindications, they are subject to mobilization on general grounds. Even 55- and 59-year-olds may be called up — if the medical commission deems them fit and the army needs their skills.

### Where Will You Be Sent? Experience Over Assault

In practice, men over 50 are rarely sent to the front lines. They are more often assigned to rear units, logistics services, administrative structures, or technical brigades — areas where experience, professional competence, and organizational skills are valued. However, there is no single rule: the place of service is determined individually — based on health, qualifications, and current needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

### Who Is Exempt? Deferment and Exemption Still Apply

Exemption or deferment is possible only with valid grounds: a conclusion from the Military Medical Commission (MMC) declaring unfitness, official exemption status, or social circumstances — such as raising three or more children under 18 or caring for a close relative with a disability. Age alone is not grounds for exemption.

### What After 60? Contract for Veterans

Those who reach 60 are subject to discharge from the Armed Forces of Ukraine — even if mobilized at 59. However, for those wishing to continue serving, a special “60+” contract is available, which can be signed for one year after passing the military-medical examination. This offers the opportunity to remain in the system, but on a voluntary basis.

### Reforms Underway: Pay and Digitalization

Although mobilization rules themselves do not change on June 1, the Ministry of Defense is preparing important reforms. The first phase begins in June — it will affect military pay. Also, early in the month, an updated version of the “Reserve+” app is planned to be presented, aimed at simplifying citizens’ interaction with the mobilization system. More significant changes — in the work of the MMC and the contract system — are still under discussion but not yet legally formalized.
