## 🎯 Key Points

- October 1 marks the Intercession of the Theotokos and Ukraine's Defenders Day.
- In October, the church honors Apostle James, Nestor the Chronicler, and Metropolitan Raphael.
- October 31 marks the memory of Righteous Petro Kalnyshevsky, the last otaman of the Zaporozhian Sich.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has published an official reminder of the key religious and memorable dates falling in the second month of autumn. October 2026 is filled with deep spiritual meaning and historical references for the Ukrainian people, combining church traditions with honoring the defenders of the homeland.

### Significance of the Intercession Feast and Defenders' Day

Traditionally, the month begins with one of the most revered and symbolic holidays—the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God, celebrated on October 1st. On this same day, Ukrainians honor those who in ancient times and modern history have defended and continue to defend the freedom, dignity, and independence of the state.

The OCU emphasizes that the Intercession has long served as a spiritual shield for Ukrainian warriors, and the modern context gives this holiday a special resonance amid ongoing large-scale trials for the entire country.

### Memory of Saint Disciples and Prominent Historical Figures

The October church calendar is rich in the names of Christ's closest disciples and champions of faith. Among them, a special place is held by the commemoration days of Metropolitan Raphael (Zaborovsky) of Kyiv and Galicia (October 22), as well as the Holy Apostle James, the Lord's Brother in the flesh, honored on October 23.

In addition, at the end of the month, believers remember the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica (October 26) and Venerable Nestor the Chronicler (October 27), whose relics have rested for centuries in the Near Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a symbol of spiritual enlightenment.

### The Long-Suffering Petro Kalnyshevsky and Spiritual Heritage

The October cycle of remembrance concludes on October 31 with the honoring of Righteous Petro (Kalnyshevsky), the last Kish otaman of the Zaporozhian Sich. The OCU notes the incredible resilience of this historical figure, whose severe trials can be compared to the fate of the Old Testament righteous man Job.

The church leadership urges believers to draw inspiration and strength from the examples of resilience shown by holy saints and historical figures, emphasizing that sincere faith helps overcome any crises and life trials.

### Contradictory Data

In open sources and various religious communities, discussions sometimes arise regarding the dates of certain events due to the coexistence of the revised Julian and Julian calendars. While the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has fully transitioned to the revised Julian style and celebrates the Intercession on October 1st, some believers continue to follow the old tradition of October 14th, regularly prompting public discussions when drafting church schedules.
