# Nausėda on talks with Putin: 'The Kremlin does not want to see us at the table' — Lithuania's position in Brussels

At a meeting of the European Council in Brussels, the President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, issued a sharp warning: the European Union should not rush into peace negotiations with Russia. According to him, the Kremlin is not yet demonstrating a real desire for dialogue, and Vladimir Putin only takes into account the position of strength.

### 'Putin does not want to see us at the negotiating table'

Nausėda stated directly that now is not the time to start negotiations with the Russian leader. 'I do not think that now is the best time to start negotiations with Putin, because Putin does not want to see us at the negotiating table,' emphasized the Lithuanian president, as reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Bloomberg.

He called on EU countries to distance themselves from attempts to involve Vladimir Putin in discussions on the conditions for ending the war until Moscow realizes its defeat. 'But first, Russia and the Russian dictator must come to the conclusion themselves that this war cannot be won and that the Russians are not winning,' added Nausėda.

### Mistakes of the past: fragmented actions of leaders

The Lithuanian leader also warned about the risks of repeating past mistakes, when individual European politicians tried to act alone. He called on EU countries to first coordinate common positions to avoid the fragmentation of diplomatic efforts.

### Coşta's secret contacts and Italy's plans

Meanwhile, it became known that the President of the European Council, António Costa, secretly contacted the Kremlin regarding Ukraine. His advisor has already held two talks with the entourage of the head of the Russian Federation — the EU is striving to secure a seat at the negotiating table following similar steps by the USA.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will put forward the candidacy of a special negotiator from the EU for the war in Ukraine at the upcoming summit. A representative of a 'medium-sized' country is planned for this position.

### The West admits: Russia has no desire to negotiate

At the same time, the efforts of the West are not yet yielding the desired results. As French President Emmanuel Macron stated, the leaders of the G7 and US President Donald Trump agreed that the Russian Federation had no serious desire to conduct negotiations, and all previous attempts at dialogue proved futile.
