# NBU Raises Key Rate to 15.5%: Reasons for the Decision and Consequences for Ukraine's Economy

The Board of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) decided to raise the key rate from 15% to 15.5% per annum. The decision was announced during the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee on July 30. The regulator explained that the need to tighten monetary policy is due to increasing price pressure and the expected acceleration of inflation by the end of the current year.

The NBU statement notes that the rate hike is aimed at maintaining the attractiveness of hryvnia assets and the stability of the currency market. According to regulator representatives, these measures will help return inflation to a deceleration trajectory towards the target of 5% by 2027.

### Revision of Macroeconomic Forecasts

The National Bank has updated its inflation forecast for 2026. While in April it was expected that the consumer price index would reach 9.4%, the regulator now forecasts a price increase of 10%. In July, overall inflation, according to NBU estimates, resumed its growth.

The regulator links this trend to several factors:

  - Expansion of budgetary stimuli;

  - Increased enterprise spending on labor costs;

  - Secondary effects from rising fuel prices;

  - Depreciation of the hryvnia in previous periods.

### Impact on the Financial Market

The increase in the key rate will directly affect the operating conditions of commercial banks and the availability of credit resources. On the one hand, this should stimulate the growth of returns on hryvnia deposits, allowing citizens to protect their savings from inflation. On the other hand, borrowed money will become more expensive.

For businesses, this means higher costs for lending and leasing programs, which could slow down the recovery of non-military sectors of the economy. Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance will have to increase the yield on government bonds (OVGZ) to finance the budget deficit, which will increase the costs of servicing the national debt.

### Factors of Inflationary Pressure

The situation in the fuel market also remains tense. The shortage of diesel fuel and the introduction of restrictions at gas stations have led to an increase in logistics costs. This, in turn, affects the final cost of food and basic goods.

Moreover, there is a labor shortage in the rear sectors. Enterprises are forced to raise wages to retain specialists, which also contributes to the growth of costs and prices. Abnormally hot weather and the overload of the power system, damaged by strikes, also put pressure on the economy, forcing the import of electricity and spending foreign exchange reserves.

Thus, the NBU rate hike is a response to a complex of challenges facing the Ukrainian economy under current conditions.
