The announcement, published on October 31, 2026, emerged as one of the most unexpected events in the gaming and television industries in recent months: the project received not just a prominent name, but an entire creative team capable of reimagining the very format of adapting a competitive shooter for the big screen. ### Donald Glover: Director, Writer, and Lead Actor The central figure of the project is Donald Glover—an Emmy and Golden Globe winner known for the series Atlanta and the film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. According to the official announcement, Glover will assume multiple key roles simultaneously: he will serve as director, writer, executive producer, and lead actor. Such a combination of creative and acting responsibilities for a single person in television production is rare and underscores the ambition of the concept. His longtime co-creator and brother, Stephen Glover, will also join the project as a writer and producer. ### Why the Announcement Came as a Surprise to the Industry The original PUBG, released in 2017, is built on competitive survival mechanics and lacks an established story canon, characters, or narrative arc that could easily serve as the foundation for a series. Unlike universes like Dota 2 or Hearthstone, where developed worlds and histories already exist, PUBG is primarily an arena, a set of rules, and randomness. This is precisely why engaging the Glover brothers' team—whose creative style is marked by conceptualism and non-linearity—indicates that viewers will receive not a cliché shooter-based action flick, but an auteur statement utilizing the aesthetics and structure of a battle royale as a metaphor. ### Krafton’s Strategy: From Game to Media Franchise The project fits into Krafton's broader strategy to transform PUBG into a full-fledged media franchise. The company, founded in South Korea and having grown into one of the largest publishers of mobile and PC games, is consistently expanding the ecosystem around its flagship title: from mobile versions and brand collaborations to cinematic and serial adaptations. Partnering with Netflix, which possesses global distribution and extensive experience in original series production, enables Krafton to reach beyond the gaming community and attract audiences who have never opened PUBG but are familiar with names like Donald Glover. ### What This Means for the Adaptation Industry The announcement of the PUBG series sets a new precedent in the genre of competitive game adaptations. While television and film versions of shooters have traditionally relied on fabricated "behind-the-scenes stories" or parody formats, this project banks on auteur cinema, where survival mechanics become a dramaturgical tool. For viewers, this promises a non-linear, conceptual narrative, and for the industry, proof that even a game without a canon can become the basis for a serious television product when creators with the appropriate name and vision take the helm. ## Fact-Check & Sources - [Неожиданный анонс от Netflix: Дональд Гловер снимет сериал по мотивам королевской битвы PUBG](https://www.goha.ru/neozhidannyj-anons-ot-netflix-donald-glover-snimet-serial-po-motivam-korolevskoj-bitvy-pubg-ln7VRR) - Official Netflix and Krafton announcement: creative team composition (Donald Glover, Stephen Glover), roles, and strategic context of the project. ## FAQ ### Who will direct and star in the PUBG series?
