# New 2000 Hryvnia Banknote: Why the Note Featuring Stus's Portrait Won't Fuel Inflation

Ukraine is preparing to introduce a new banknote with a denomination of 2000 hryvnias. This event, marking the country's first currency system update in seven years, has raised questions among citizens regarding its impact on prices. However, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has already provided a clear explanation: the introduction of the banknote will not trigger price increases and will not affect the inflation rate.

### Technical Optimization, Not Emission

The main myth surrounding new money is the belief that its introduction increases the money supply in the economy. Regulator experts explain that this is not the case. The release of the new banknote will occur exclusively through exchange for non-cash funds or other denominations. Thus, the total volume of money in the economy will remain unchanged.

"Emission has long been unrelated to the operation of a real printing press and is first implemented on a non-cash basis," the NBU emphasized. The central bank constantly prints new banknotes to replace worn or damaged ones, and this is a standard technical process that does not lead to the devaluation of the hryvnia.

### Vasyl Stus Portrait and Banknote Design

The country's new high-denomination banknote will feature a unique design with an image of the great poet of the Sixtiers, Vasyl Stus. This decision highlights the cultural significance of the individual in Ukrainian history. The appearance of the 2000 hryvnia banknote is a result of the nominal growth of the economy, not its cause.

### Introduction Schedule and Reasons for Update

The regulator has clarified the schedule for updating cash circulation: the 2000 hryvnia banknote will be introduced in September. Ukrainians will be able to see and use the new money starting from September 4 of this year. The NBU explains the need for this step by significant changes in the macroeconomy, including the growth of average wages and the volume of cash in the country over recent years.

When there are too many banknotes in circulation, it creates inconveniences for citizens and increases state expenses for servicing cash circulation. Updating denominations allows for the optimization of these processes.

### Inflation Forecasts

Currently, the inflation rate in Ukraine stands at around 7%, while the regulator's strategic goal is to reduce it to 5%. The NBU press service noted that a certain acceleration of inflation is expected in the second half of 2026 against the backdrop of significant business costs, particularly for energy carriers and wages. However, by the end of 2027, a decline in the price index is expected, and in 2028, inflation should return to the target of 5%.

### Parliament's Position

The parliament has also commented on the situation, analyzing the risks to citizens' wallets. The head of the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Danylo Hetmantsev, assured that the appearance of the banknote is purely a technical solution for the convenience of transactions, which is incapable of pushing prices up.
