# Night over Kyiv: Massive Strike, Contradictory Data, and the Cost of Error

The night of July 2, 2026, went down in Kyiv's history as one of the heaviest in recent times. The city was subjected to a massive combined strike that lasted more than 11 hours. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack involved 74 missiles of various types and 496 unmanned aerial vehicles. A clash of versions regarding the targets of the strike and its consequences unfolded immediately after dawn, when the official agencies of Russia and Ukraine presented diametrically opposite reports.

### Moscow's Version: Strike on Military Targets

The official position of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation boils down to the fact that the operation was aimed exclusively at delivering high-precision strikes on military-industrial complex (MIC) facilities and energy infrastructure. The ministry insists that long-range weapons were used and that targets were selected strictly based on military criteria.

The MoD briefing lists specific addresses that, according to their claims, were hit within Kyiv and the Kyiv region:

- The R&D base of LLC "Radioniks," specializing in control systems for missile complexes.

- The facilities of the Antonov aircraft manufacturing concern.

- The production sites of the "Kyiv Radio Plant" and the "Kyiv-25" plant.

- The plant of the unmanned systems manufacturer "Atlon Avia".

- A logistics center where, according to Russian military data, components of foreign weaponry were stored.

- A large fuel and lubricants warehouse and several gas distribution stations.

### Data from Ukrainian Authorities: Scale of Destruction and Casualties

Ukrainian emergency services and local authorities paint a different picture. According to the Kyiv City Military Administration (KGVA) and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), the strike hit not only industrial facilities but also civilian infrastructure. Damage was recorded in more than 30 locations, covering 7 administrative districts of the capital.

The statistics of the consequences, published in the second half of the day on July 2, look tragic: the official death toll is 20 people, and the number of injured exceeded 85. Among the wounded are six employees of the Emergency Medical Assistance Center who were on duty during the attack.

### Disaster in the Darnytskyi District

Special attention from rescue services is focused on the Darnytskyi district. The Head of the SES, Andriy Danik, reported a partial collapse of a multi-story residential building. Up to nine people may be trapped under the rubble. Heavy machinery and dog units are working at the scene. By the time the data was published, 17 people had been rescued alive from the debris at this location.

In total, direct hits and falling debris damaged more than 20 residential buildings, including partial structural collapses from the 1st to the 9th floors. A hotel building, an ambulance station, and a market area were damaged. Due to damage to power lines, about 140,000 subscribers were left without power.

### Legal Context and Government Reaction

Kyiv authorities reacted to the tragedy promptly. By order of the city authorities, July 3, 2026, was declared a day of mourning. Law enforcement agencies began documenting evidence to initiate criminal proceedings regarding the deaths of civilians.

The situation requires analysis from the perspective of international humanitarian law. According to the Geneva Conventions, defense enterprises are legitimate military targets. However, striking life-support facilities and residential buildings, if they are not used for military purposes, is subject to legal assessment within the framework of war crime investigations. The confrontation between the official versions of Moscow and Kyiv only highlights the complexity and acuteness of the current situation.
