# Nuclear Breakthrough for AI: Crusoe and Aalo Atomics Build the World's First Atomic AI Factory

The artificial intelligence sector is facing an energy shortage challenge, and two tech giants are proposing a radical solution. Crusoe and Aalo Atomics have announced a strategic partnership aimed at creating the world's first specialized "AI factory" powered by small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This project is designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply for high-performance computing, which requires colossal resources.

### Pilot Launch in Idaho

The first step towards realizing this ambitious plan will be the launch of a pilot data center for Crusoe's Spark cloud service. The launch is scheduled for 2027 at the Idaho National Laboratory. The project is positioned as a large-scale demonstration of how effectively nuclear generation can serve artificial intelligence workloads.

According to Matt Losiak, CEO of Aalo Atomics, the company has already begun work on a second reactor, which will be located next to the 10 MW Aalo-X test unit. It is this commercial-scale system that will become the power source for the future Crusoe Spark data center.

### The Path to Criticality and Commercialization

Reactor development is on schedule. Aalo Atomics is one of four companies that achieved criticality within the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program within the established timeframe. However, experts from TheEnergyMag remind us that achieving criticality within the pilot program is not yet equivalent to obtaining full permission for commercial use.

Nevertheless, the partners have outlined clear timelines for scaling. By the end of 2029, Crusoe plans to deploy Aalo Pods and full-scale SMR-based power plants with a total capacity of 50 MW at its sites.

### Capacity Expansion in Texas

Parallel to nuclear developments, Crusoe is actively expanding its infrastructure in the state of Texas. The company plans to expand its Goodnight campus by constructing two additional buildings. The cost of this phase is estimated at approximately $1 billion.

According to the application filed with the state's Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction of the first building should be completed by August 1, and the second by March 2027. In total, the facility will include at least six buildings. The power requirements for the first phase alone will reach up to 530 MW, highlighting the scale of the energy challenges the company must overcome.

### Environmental Issues and Regulation

The rapid development of data centers in Texas has not gone unnoticed by researchers. Experts from Floodlight found that developers in the region often use simplified permits to begin construction of their own power plants, allowing them to bypass public discussion of potential environmental consequences. In the context of the transition to nuclear energy, this aspect becomes particularly important for the public and regulators.
