# Oil spill within city limits: how Kyiv is combating the aftermath of the attack on Kyrylivske Lake

A large-scale operation to clean the water body has been launched in the Obolon district of Kyiv. Kyrylivske Lake, which has become a victim of the consequences of the Russian attack on July 2, is now at the center of attention for city services and ecologists. The water, covered by a thick film of oil products, has turned into a battlefield for the city's ecology.

The situation arose after strikes on the capital damaged an industrial facility. Through the sewage system, oil entered the Syrets stream and then flowed into the lake's water area. According to the Kyiv City State Administration's Department of Environmental Protection, the threat of pollution spreading to the Dnipro River has been completely ruled out.

### Mechanization of the fight against the spill

Liquidation of the consequences requires not only human effort but also complex machinery. Nine floating skimmers — special devices designed to collect liquid pollutants from the surface — are working continuously on the water. To prevent the oil film from spreading across the entire water body, specialists have installed four boom barrier systems. They already cover about a third of the water area, creating a reliable barrier.

Special attention has been paid to the transfer structure connecting Kyrylivske and Yordanivske lakes. It was promptly blocked and additionally treated with sorbent to prevent the migration of toxic substances into the neighboring water body.

### Environmental damage and forecast

Specialists from the Institute of Hydrobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the State Fish Agency have already conducted a preliminary assessment of the situation. Despite alarming visual effects, no mass mortality of fish and plants has been recorded. Scientists note only isolated cases of flora and fauna death.

The final calculation of environmental damage will be made by the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Capital District after receiving the results of laboratory tests, which are expected on July 9.

### Restoration plans and safety measures

After the active phase of liquidation is completed, a set of measures for the rehabilitation of the water body will be developed. In particular, the possibility of water aeration and artificial restocking is being considered to return the ecosystem to a normal state.

Kyrylivske Lake is a technical water body where swimming is prohibited even in peacetime. However, due to contamination with oil products, any contact with the water and fishing is categorically not recommended at least until the end of summer.

Separate recommendations concern residents of nearby houses. Due to the evaporation of fuel and lubricants, local residents should limit opening windows and refrain from relaxing on the shores until the work is completed. The situation remains under constant control by city services.

Recall that on July 2, Kyiv was subjected to a massive strike. Damage was recorded in seven districts of the capital at more than 30 locations, including residential buildings, substations, and warehouses. The accident at Kyrylivske Lake became one of the most noticeable environmental consequences of that night.
