On Sunday, August 2, 2026, an event occurred in Armenia that may seem shocking at first glance: Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan officially submitted his resignation. However, behind this headline news lies not a political crisis, but a planned constitutional procedure that opens the door to a new phase of the country's leader's rule.

### Technical Resignation by the Letter of the Law

Pashinyan's decision to lay down the powers of his cabinet was dictated by Article 158 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. According to this regulatory act, the government is obliged to resign on the first day of the first session of the National Assembly of a new convocation. In this case, it concerns the parliament of the 9th convocation.

It is important to understand: this is not the end of Pashinyan's career, but a necessary legal mechanism for updating power. Until the formation of a new government composition and the swearing-in of ministers, Nikol Pashinyan and his allies will continue to perform their duties in the status of 'acting', ensuring the stability of the country's management.

### Guaranteed Return to Power

Despite the formal resignation, the political fate of Nikol Pashinyan is predetermined. In the early parliamentary elections held on June 7, 2026, his party 'Civil Contract' won a convincing victory, receiving 49.74% of the voters' votes.

This result ensured the ruling faction 64 mandates out of 105 in the National Assembly. Such a majority is sufficient for Pashinyan to unilaterally confirm himself as Prime Minister without the need to build complex coalitions with opposition groups. It is expected that his candidacy will be submitted and approved by President Vaagn Khachaturyan within the next few hours.

### Geopolitical Context and 'Purge' of the Opposition

The path to this victory went through a sharp diplomatic crisis. The elections took place against the backdrop of unprecedented pressure from Russia. The Kremlin demonstratively recalled its ambassador, introduced strict trade restrictions against Armenian exports, and Vladimir Putin openly threatened Yerevan with destabilization according to the 'Ukrainian scenario' due to Pashinyan's course on European integration.

After the Constitutional Court rejected the lawsuits of seven opposition parties that tried to challenge the election results, Pashinyan went on the offensive. Large-scale criminal investigations have been launched against the leaders of the pro-Kremlin opposition. The head of the 'Prosperous Armenia' party, Gagik Tsarukyan, is under arrest, while former President Robert Kocharyan and billionaire Samvel Karapetyan are under investigation.

### Personnel Decides Everything

Significant personnel changes also took place in the new convocation of the parliament. Former Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan officially refused his mandate. The ruling party nominated Ruben Rubinyan for the post of Speaker of the Parliament, signaling a change in personnel priorities in the legislative branch of power.
