# The State Takes Care: How Benefits and Allowances for Liberated POWs Have Changed

Ukraine continues to improve its support system for military personnel who have survived captivity. The government has decided to expand the circle of individuals eligible for monthly financial assistance of 50,000 hryvnias. This measure is aimed at helping those defenders who require long-term recovery after returning to freedom.

### Expansion of Payment Criteria

As reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, state support is now available to a wider circle of defenders. Previously, assistance could have been limited, but now the government has accommodated those in need, taking into account the severity of the conditions in which the military personnel were held.

The key condition for receiving a payment of 50,000 hryvnias per month has become the need for inpatient treatment for more than 30 days. This means that the state takes on financial support during the period when the serviceman cannot work due to health issues requiring long-term medical observation.

### Government Position

Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko emphasized that the state's task is to ensure a decent life for all defenders, both male and female, who have survived the inhumane conditions of Russian captivity. Expanding the circle of beneficiaries is a direct response to these challenges and demonstrates the authorities' readiness to support those who have gone through trials.

### Additional Support Measures

In addition to financial payments, other administrative procedures have been simplified for military personnel liberated from captivity. Since November 1, 2025, the procedure for obtaining a deferment from mobilization has been simplified in Ukraine. Now, a single application to the Center for Provision of Administrative Services (TsNAP) is sufficient, after which the deferment is automatically extended every 90 days. This relieves veterans from the need to constantly confirm their status.

Furthermore, the Verkhovna Rada previously adopted a law granting military personnel liberated from captivity the right to an additional leave of 90 calendar days with full preservation of their pay. This allows defenders to restore their strength and health without losing income.

These measures, taken together, create a more reliable social protection system for those who have gone through captivity, ensuring them not only financial support but also the opportunity for full recovery.
