# Pension Fund of Ukraine: How to receive a backdated supplement for several months

Many Ukrainians are unaware that in certain situations, the Pension Fund not only increases the amount of the monthly payment but also compensates for funds that a person should have received earlier. This means that after recalculation, a pensioner may receive a lump-sum supplement accumulated over two, three, or even more months.

RBC-Ukraine explains in which cases the legislation provides for the accrual of a pension "backdated" and how citizens can receive the funds due to them.

### How the backdating mechanism works

It is important to understand that this is not a new state program or one-off humanitarian aid. Such payments are enshrined in legislation. They are made if the right to a pension increase arose for a citizen earlier than the Pension Fund (PFU) completed the recalculation procedure or received the necessary supporting documents.

The essence of the mechanism is simple: the fund determines the date from which a person had the legal right to an increase and pays the difference between the old and new pension amounts for all missed months.

### The situation with working pensioners

The most common case where a delay occurs followed by a lump-sum transfer of funds concerns working pensioners. If a citizen continues to work officially after the pension is assigned and accumulates the necessary insurance seniority, the fund is obliged to conduct a recalculation.

According to the rules, the new pension amount is established from April 1. However, the actual increase often happens with a delay of several months. The reason lies in bureaucratic procedures: employers do not submit reports instantly, so the PFU physically cannot immediately take the new seniority into account.

Once the reports are received and the recalculation is completed, the pensioner is paid not only the new pension amount but also the entire accumulated difference for the previous months. This is why sums significantly exceeding the usual monthly payment often arrive in accounts.

It is worth noting that for the annual recalculation, working pensioners do not need to apply to the Pension Fund — this procedure is carried out automatically.

### Other grounds for recalculation

The possibility of receiving a "backdated" supplement exists not only for those who continue to work. Recalculation can also be made in other cases where a person's life circumstances change after the pension is assigned or previously unaccounted seniority is discovered.

In situations related to the discovery of unaccounted seniority or earnings, a personal application is unavoidable. The citizen must provide documents to the fund. After verifying the provided information, the Pension Fund reviews the pension amount and pays the funds that the person did not receive due to a lack of up-to-date data.

Previously, RBC-Ukraine reported on other ways to increase pension payments. In particular, experts explained which Ukrainians can receive a "forgotten" supplement, as well as explained the conditions for assigning supplements that can increase the pension by almost 1300 hryvnias. In addition, for citizens who do not have the right to a pension, there is the possibility of applying for state social assistance.
