# Passing the Baton: The Pentagon Entrusts Allies with Managing the Mission to Support Ukraine

Significant changes have occurred in the structure of the US military presence in Europe. The US Department of Defense has ordered its European Command to reorganize the Ukraine Security Assistance Group (SAG-U). This high-level decision effectively means handing over the reins of this mission to European allies.

### The Defense Secretary's Decision

The initiative comes directly from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Washington emphasizes that this step is intended to confirm Europe's leadership role in supporting Ukraine's defense, a role the continent has demonstrated over the past year. Representatives of US European Command assured that the change in leadership will not affect the pace or volume of aid to Kyiv.

However, the reorganization also has a pragmatic rationale. The Pentagon noted that transferring authority will allow the US to free up resources for other global priorities. Earlier, on July 31, Politico reported that Washington was stepping back from directly leading the group, which effectively means the US is withdrawing from the process of shaping Ukraine's future army.

### The Key Role of SAG-U

The Ukraine Security Assistance Group was established on November 4, 2022, and is based in Wiesbaden, Germany. Over three and a half years of operation, the structure has become the central hub for coordinating military aid. Through SAG-U, more than $2 billion has been distributed. The group's areas of responsibility included:

- Coordination of weapons supplies;

- Organization of training for Ukrainian military personnel;

- Logistical support for the mission.

Until the announcement of the reorganization, the mission was led by US Lieutenant General Guillaume Bopper. Now, management functions are transitioning to partners from Europe, marking a new stage in the architecture of international support for Kyiv.
