# Pickups and Stumps: Why the Army is Massively Switching to Universal Trucks

In the conditions of modern warfare, where every day dictates its own harsh rules, the question of vehicle choice comes to the forefront. As revealed by an analysis of the situation on the front lines, it is light commercial all-wheel-drive vehicles with a "pickup" body that have proven to be the most universal machines for carrying out combat tasks.

This conclusion is contained in the RBC-Ukraine material "Pickups and Stumps: What the Army Drives and Will the Armed Forces of Ukraine Switch to Ukrainian Cars". Experts and participants in the conflict agree: a ladder frame chassis, four-wheel drive, and a diesel engine make this type of equipment a virtually ideal base for any solution, both on the line of contact and in the rear.

### Versatility in Action

Interviewees representing auto importers note that the term "pickup" in this context is more of a slang name for a light truck. It is precisely these light off-road trucks that serve as an ideal base for creating specialized transport.

The Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation confirmed that pickups have become the best solution for multi-purpose use. Thanks to their design, these vehicles perform a wide range of tasks:

    - Transporting personnel and ammunition;

    - Serving as platforms for mobile fire groups;

    - Used as repair complexes;

    - Applied for launching UAVs (catapults);

    - Ensuring logistics for UGR (unguided rocket projectiles).

In the civilian segment, this is practically the only car available from a dealership that can withstand loads comparable to specially developed military equipment. At the same time, it allows for modifications: for a reasonable budget, the issue of suspension reinforcement and improved off-road capability can be resolved.

### Reliability vs. "Smart" Systems

Procurement officers working with RBC-Ukraine emphasize that when choosing equipment, they focus on models with a long production history that are well known to local service centers. Frontline needs dictate high requirements for reliability and maintainability, especially in conditions where reaching an official dealer or a specialized service station is impossible.

Decisions are often made jointly with the military, taking into account the real possibilities of the market. Unfortunately, modern global manufacturers are implementing systems that are relevant in civilian life but extremely harmful in combat conditions. For example, overly sensitive fuel systems or specific technical solutions can become fatal: damage to a single ABS wiring harness can stop the vehicle in an instant, leaving the crew without protection.
