Sony has released its latest financial report, revealing the current sales status of the PlayStation 5 gaming console. To date, the cumulative shipment of the console has reached 95.3 million units. This figure solidifies the device's status as one of the most successful gaming platforms in industry history.

### Sales Trends and the Impact of GTA VI

Despite the impressive total figure, sales momentum in the last quarter shows a certain slowdown. During the reporting period, only 1.6 million consoles were sold. For comparison, a year ago, this figure was 36% higher. Experts and analysts attribute the current decline to the anticipation of the release of one of the most anticipated games of the decade — Grand Theft Auto VI. The market traditionally freezes ahead of the release of such large-scale projects, which often leads to a temporary drop in "hardware" sales.

### Place in the History of the Gaming Industry

The cumulative shipment of 95.3 million units has allowed the PlayStation 5 to take eighth place in the ranking of the best-selling consoles of all time. Successfully overtaking its predecessor, the PS3, which sold 87.4 million units, the PS5 has come close to the legendary Nintendo Wii. To surpass the Wii with its result of 101.63 million, Sony needs to sell just over 6 million more devices.

Ahead of the PlayStation 5 are its direct predecessors. The next target will be the original PlayStation, sold in a run of 102.49 million units. The pinnacle of the company's history remains the PlayStation 4, which managed to capture the market and sell 117.2 million consoles.

### Digitalization and the Move Away from Discs

Sony's report also sheds light on changing consumer habits. In the last quarter, digital copies of games accounted for 82% of total sales volume. This confirms the global trend of moving away from physical media. Earlier, the company announced that by 2028 it would completely stop releasing games on discs, focusing on a fully digital future for the gaming industry.
