# Poland's Eastern Shield: 61 km on paper and 1 km in reality — how the construction of the defensive line is progressing

The Polish "Eastern Shield" program aims to create a continuous defensive line along the border with Russia and Belarus. According to official data, the project already covers 61 kilometers of the border strip. However, the reality looks different: over the last six months, builders have laid only one kilometer of new fortifications.

Of the declared 61 km, there are only 10 kilometers of actual linear fortifications. The rest consists of prepared sections where concrete hedgehogs, barbed wire, and other temporary obstacles can be quickly deployed in the event of a crisis. Such reserves are stored in warehouses and are intended for the rapid blocking of the border in the event of a sudden threat.

Military experts note that the construction pace remains extremely low. Despite ambitious plans, the actual length of completed fortifications does not yet allow for speaking of a full-fledged defensive line. The first section, 2.3 km long, was handed over back in February 2025 — it was located at strategically important crossings, but the exact location remains classified.

In 2026, the Polish Ministry of National Defence plans to allocate about 150 million euros for the development of the "Eastern Shield." These funds will go towards expanding the linear part of the fortifications and creating new logistics hubs, which will ensure the rapid transfer of equipment and materials to the border.

The country's authorities aim to cover another 207 km of the state border. The overall plan provides for the protection of almost 700 km of the border strip. Of these, about 500 km will be fortified with fortifications of various types — from concrete barriers to minefields. The remaining territory is planned to be protected using natural obstacles: rivers, swamps, and forests, which will hinder the enemy's advance.

The "Eastern Shield" project was announced in 2024 as a large-scale defense initiative aimed at increasing the security of NATO's eastern flank. Despite the slow pace of implementation, Polish military personnel continue to work on its completion, considering it a critically important element of national security.
