The eastern part of the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, became the scene of one of the most severe natural disasters in recent years. A massive forest fire that broke out on Thursday, July 9, 2026, claimed 11 lives. Another 19 citizens are currently missing. The operational situation in the municipalities of Los Gallardos and Bédar remains critical.

The tragedy was not solely the result of a natural disaster. The key factor that turned the fire into a mass casualty event was the violation of safety protocols by the evacuees themselves.
