# Prices for buckwheat and oil are rising, while eggs are getting cheaper: NBU reveals details of Ukrainian inflation

In May 2026, inflation in Ukraine began to slow down, but for ordinary consumers, this does not mean a universal price reduction. While some goods are becoming more affordable, others continue to rise in price, creating a complex picture on store shelves and in receipts. The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has analyzed the situation and explained exactly which factors continue to push prices up.

According to official data from the State Statistics Service, annual inflation reached 8.2%. This figure was slightly higher than the regulator's forecasts, although lower than the previous month (8.6%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.9%.

### Why businesses are raising prices

NBU experts point to fundamental price pressure. Even with a seasonal slowdown in inflation, businesses are forced to factor in rising operating costs into the price of goods and services. The main drivers of growth have been:

    - Increased cost of electricity and fuel;

    - Rising logistics costs;

    - Wage growth.

These factors directly affect the final price of the product that ends up on the counter.

### What has become cheaper and what has become more expensive

The situation in the food market is uneven. Shoppers have noticed that the rate of price growth for pork and chicken has slowed. Eggs have even become cheaper due to increased supply in the market. The cost of apples has decreased, and cucumbers are rising in price less rapidly than in previous periods.

However, there are categories where inflation remains significant. Buckwheat and millet continued to rise in price. The National Bank explains this by limited supply in the market and high costs for grain processing.

Among the products that increased in price the most were:

    - Sunflower oil;

    - Bakery products;

    - Fish and seafood.

The cost of these goods was influenced by the same factors — expensive fuel, logistics, and raw materials. It is worth noting fruits separately: in May, they became 11.1% more expensive, becoming the leaders in price growth.

### Fuel and services: growth continues

Inflation has affected not just the grocery aisles. In May, Ukrainians faced a rise in the cost of services. Car repair and maintenance, driving lessons, as well as beauty and leisure services became more expensive. In a number of cities, the tariff for public transport continued to rise. In the segment of road transport, prices increased by 2.7%.

The situation with fuel remains mixed: gasoline continued to rise in price in May, while diesel fuel and autogas became somewhat cheaper.

Despite the fact that overall inflation has slowed under the influence of seasonal factors, the regulator warns: as long as businesses bear high costs for energy carriers and logistics, price pressure will persist.
