# Project West Ford: How the US Created the First Cloud of Space Debris from Millions of Copper Needles

More than 60 years ago, at the height of the Cold War, the United States carried out one of the boldest and most unexpected space experiments in history. To ensure invulnerable military communications, the government decided to scatter hundreds of millions of microscopic copper needles into orbit. This project, named West Ford, not only demonstrated the technological capabilities of the time but also created one of the first major accumulations of space debris.

### The Search for Invulnerable Communication

In the 1960s, the strategic situation required the military to have reliable long-distance communication channels that did not depend on submarine cables or the natural ionosphere. The latter was extremely vulnerable: a powerful nuclear explosion could disrupt its properties and paralyze radio communications over vast areas. The US Air Force, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), proposed a radical solution — the creation of an artificial layer to reflect radio waves.

### The "Copper Cloud" Technology

The idea was to deploy a cloud of copper dipole needles into orbit. These microscopic elements were intended to scatter in space and act as a giant mirror reflecting radio signals. The first launch attempt in 1961 failed, but in May 1963, engineers managed to realize the plan. Using a special disperser based on naphthalene gel, between 120 and 215 million copper needles were deployed into orbit.

### Success and Data Transmission Issues

The experiment proved its technical viability. Researchers successfully transmitted voice, text, and data between ground stations in Massachusetts (Millstone Hill) and California (Camp Parks). However, the signal quality left much to be desired. According to Dr. Donald MacLellan of the Lincoln Laboratory at MIT, the received data suffered from significant frequency and time distortions. This was due to differences in orbital velocities and the constant changing position of individual needles within the cloud.

### Criticism and Long-Term Consequences

The project provoked a stormy reaction from the scientific community. Astronomers warned that the artificial cloud would interfere with observations of celestial bodies, while satellite operators feared the risk of collisions with metal elements. It was initially assumed that under the influence of solar radiation, the needles would quickly deorbit and burn up in the atmosphere. Most of them did indeed burn up, but some clumped together into heavier aggregates.

These formations did not leave orbit as quickly as planned. According to NASA, even decades later, dozens of such clumps continue to remain in low Earth orbit, some at altitudes exceeding 2,000 km. With the advent of full-fledged communication satellites, the need for an artificial ionosphere disappeared, but the debris from Project West Ford remains in orbit as a monument to the early space age and a reminder of how past experiments shape the environment of the future.
