# Putin Significantly Strengthens Protection of His Valdai Residence, OSINT Analysis Shows

## Key Points

- A new air defense ring within a 50-kilometer radius was erected around the Valdai residence
- More than 50 positions of Pantsir or Tor air defense systems were discovered
- Protection covers the Khotilovo military base and Lisy Island
- Air defense density in Valdai is comparable to the scale of Moscow region protection

An additional defense ring composed of air defense towers has been erected around Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai, as confirmed by recent OSINT analysis of satellite imagery. The new security system covers a 50-kilometer radius and incorporates short- and medium-range surface-to-air missile systems.

### New Air Defense Positions and Infrastructure

According to satellite data published by analysts, the new air defense ring encompasses the military base in Khotilovo, which serves as a backup airfield, as well as the coastline of Lake Vyshny Volochyok. In total, the study identified over 50 air defense positions around Valdai, highlighting the severity of security measures undertaken by the Russian authorities.

One of the key towers of the outer ring was deployed back in March 2026 at the Khotilovo base, which is regularly used by the country's leadership. A new laboratory facility has also appeared on Lisy Island in the middle of the reservoir, with its security now reinforced by air defense units.

### Security Context and Past Incidents

The reinforcement of the Valdai residence's defense follows previously documented measures, including the installation of anti-drone nets. In January 2026, Russian agencies claimed that there was an alleged drone attack attempt on the residence, but official Kyiv rejected these accusations, and independent experts along with the U.S. CIA expressed skepticism regarding the credibility of such claims.

The scale of the deployed air defense system is unprecedented for a sparsely populated area: fewer than 100,000 people live within a 50-kilometer radius of the residence. By comparison, the number of defensive positions in Valdai is approximately half the volume of similar facilities deployed in Moscow and the Moscow region, which has a population exceeding 20 million.

### Private Life and Future Prospects

Beyond military security issues, the Valdai residence is known for hosting Alina Kabaeva and her children for significant periods, with governesses from Western nations hired to raise them. The ongoing expansion of military presence and air defense systems around the facility points to the leadership's desire to minimize any potential aerial risks, despite substantial costs and the concentration of resources in a remote region.
