# The Queue for Tickets: A Battle for Train Seats Erupts in Ukraine

The summer season of 2026 in Ukraine began with unprecedented hype. The railway carrier "Ukrzaliznytsia" is recording record demand for tickets, turning the purchase of a travel document into a real race. The company warns that in the coming weeks, six or seven passengers may compete for a single free seat in a carriage.

### The Mathematics of Deficit

The situation in the railway transport sector has reached its peak. According to the carrier, the system processes about 340,000 ticket purchase requests daily. Meanwhile, the actual number of passengers traveling by train daily is about 80,000 people. This gap between supply and demand creates a colossal load on infrastructure and logistics.

Experts at "Ukrzaliznytsia" predict that competition will only grow. If four people currently compete for one seat, this ratio will shift to six or seven applicants per ticket on peak days. In total, the company plans to transport about 7 million passengers during the summer season.

### Real Statistics and Popular Routes

The first figures of the season speak for themselves. During the first week of summer, more than 472,000 people used the trains. The leader in terms of occupancy was train No. 104 "Lviv — Lozova", which transported more than 13,000 passengers. This route, connecting the western regions with the south of the country, demonstrates how high the demand for travel within the state is.

The company promised to regularly update information on demand and popular directions so that passengers could navigate the situation. However, as noted by RBK-Ukraine, the shortage of seats is not a temporary anomaly but a systemic problem exacerbated by military actions. Due to Russian shelling, since the start of the full-scale war, 46 passenger carriages have been destroyed, and another 200 units of equipment require repair. As a result, demand for tickets on average exceeds the number of available seats by four times.

### How to Grab a Ticket: Tips from the Carrier

In conditions of acute shortage of seats, "Ukrzaliznytsia" recommends that passengers act in advance. Ticket sales for most departures open 20 days before departure. The chances of a successful purchase depend directly on how quickly the passenger decides on the date and starts monitoring the schedule.

For those who cannot afford to wait, the company advises using the auto-purchase function in the mobile application. The algorithm works simply: the user selects the desired train and date, and the system automatically purchases the ticket at the moment it appears on sale.

Separate conditions apply to military personnel and their families. A special ticket reserve is provided for them, access to which is via the "Army+" application.

### New Schedule and Network Expansion

An attempt to smooth out the sharp corners will be a change in the schedule, which comes into force on June 28. "Ukrzaliznytsia" is launching 12 new routes, transferring some routes to daily operation, and speeding up certain trains. There are also plans to expand communication with the Carpathians, which should facilitate the tourist flow to the mountain region.

Despite the new measures, the carrier urges vigilance and planning trips in advance, as the battle for a seat on the train this summer season promises to be hot.
