- Vinicius Junior received a straight red card for a hair-pulling incident
- Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin spent the match on the bench

Real Madrid secured a narrow yet crucial victory over Villarreal in the eighth round of the Spanish La Liga championship. The match, which took place on October 10, 2026, at the legendary Santiago Bernabeu stadium, proved to be incredibly dramatic, remembered not only for a debut goal but also for strict disciplinary sanctions and VAR interventions.

### Tactical decisions and match background

The Madrid head coach unexpectedly left one of the team's leaders, Vinicius Junior, on the bench, entrusting a starting spot to young newcomer Ian Diomande. The hosts tried to seize the initiative from the first minutes, but Villarreal's organized defense effectively contained all attacking efforts. Kylian Mbappe had one of the best chances to open the scoring, but his shot hit the goalpost.

### Debut goal and turning point

For the second half, Real's coaching staff brought on Vinicius Junior and Marc Cucurella, which instantly energized the team's attacking play. In the 64th minute, Federico Valverde delivered a precise pass to Ian Diomande, who struck accurately to score his first goal for the Madrid powerhouse. Immediately after, it seemed the hosts would extend their lead, but the game took an unexpected turn due to a severe error by the Brazilian winger.

### Vinicius red card and nervous finale

A short while later, Vinicius hit the back of the net following a pass from Jude Bellingham, but the celebration was short-lived. After a VAR review, the referee disallowed the goal and showed the Brazilian a straight red card for grabbing Villarreal defender Nathan Salib by the hair. Real played the final minutes a man down, desperately defending against Villarreal's pressure to seal a 1-0 victory.
