# Fighting the Oil Spill: How Rescuers are Protecting Kyrylivske Lake from an Ecological Disaster

A large-scale operation is underway in Kyiv to eliminate the consequences of the ecological contamination of Kyrylivske Lake. The water body, which became a victim of the aftermath of a Russian attack, has been covered by a thick film of oil, posing a direct threat to the local ecosystem. The situation requires an immediate response and the mobilization of significant resources.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU), emergency services have been working on the water body for the fourth consecutive day. Specialists from various parts of the country are continuously fighting the spread of toxic substances, attempting to minimize damage to nature.

### Scale of Contamination

The situation at the lake remains critical. At present, the area of the oil slick on the water surface has reached 20,600 square meters. Preliminary expert estimates indicate that the approximate volume of the contaminated water layer is about 1,700 tons. Such a volume of pollutants is capable of causing irreparable harm to the flora and fauna of the water body.

To prevent further spreading of the fuel, specialists have deployed powerful protective barriers. In particular, a decision was made to completely block the underground collector connecting Kyrylivske Lake and the neighboring Yordan Lake. This measure is necessary to protect the neighboring water body from the ingress of toxic substances.

### Rescue Forces and Means

A significant force grouping has been involved in eliminating the consequences of the strike. At the scene, 55 rescuers are working, and 19 units of special equipment are deployed. Specialized means are used to collect oil products from the water surface:

    - 2 boats for rapid movement across the water body;

    - 3 trailers for transporting equipment and collected waste;

    - 9 skimmers — special devices designed for the efficient collection of oil products from the water surface.

Thanks to the coordinated actions of rescuers, 65 cubic meters of the contaminating substance have been collected to date. Of these, 18 cubic meters were eliminated directly during the last working day.

### Ecological Situation in the Capital

Ecological problems in Kyiv are not limited only to the contamination of water bodies. Recently, residents of the capital have regularly faced deteriorating air quality. On the morning of July 3, a noticeable deterioration of the ecological situation was recorded in the city, when the pollution level became harmful to sensitive population groups.

The main cause of the dense smog was the combination of two factors: fires in the natural ecosystems of the Kyiv region and the accumulation of combustion products following enemy shelling. During such periods, specialists recommend that Kyiv residents close windows in their homes, drink more water, and limit long walks around the city.

The SESU emphasized that, despite the destruction caused by the enemy, rescuers are daily restoring, protecting, and continuing the fight to preserve the environment and human life.
