Legendary Spanish midfielder David Silva has unexpectedly resumed his professional career at the age of 40. The World Cup winner has signed a short-term contract with Hong Kong club Shatin, which has become a real sensation in the football world and attracted the attention of leading sports publications.

### Background and severe injury

For the 40-year-old Spaniard, this will be his first appearance on a professional pitch since 2023. Silva announced his retirement in the summer of that year while playing for Spanish side Real Sociedad. The reason for such a sudden decision was a serious injury—a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, sustained during a pre-season training session. At the time, it seemed that the injury had finally put an end to the glorious career of one of the best playmakers of his generation.

### Star career in England and the national team

Silva received the greatest recognition during his time with English club Manchester City, whose colors he defended from 2010 to 2020. Together with the Citizens, he won 14 prestigious trophies, becoming a key figure in the club's establishment as a world football powerhouse. His career with the Spain national team was equally successful, winning the 2010 World Cup and twice winning the European Championships (2008 and 2012), making 125 appearances and scoring 35 goals for the national team.

### New challenge in Hong Kong

Now the experienced midfielder will try his hand in the Hong Kong Premier League, defending the colors of Shatin. The team is going through a difficult period and, after four rounds of the 2026/27 season, occupies tenth place out of eleven possible, with only one win and three defeats. The club's management and fans hope that David Silva's rich experience and unique vision of the pitch will help the team improve their standings and overcome the crisis.
