# Revolution on Reddit: Abandoning 'Karma' and Implementing AI Moderation

![Reddit logo on a smartphone screen, symbolizing upcoming changes: karma removal and AI moderation rollout](https://xab.info/media/2026/08/06/reddit-otkaz-ot-karmy-i-vnedrenie-ii-moderacii/reddit-otkaz-ot-karmy-i-vnedrenie-ii-moderacii-1.webp)

## 🎯 Key Points

- Reddit is introducing new protection systems that allow waiving requirements for account age and 'karma'.
- Testing of the AI tool Rules Hub for automating moderation is being expanded.
- The company aims to turn weekly users into daily ones.
- Reddit's revenue in the second quarter reached $805 million.

Reddit, one of the largest hubs for internet discussion, has announced major changes to its infrastructure. According to Techcrunch, these updates aim to simplify user interaction with the site, combat spam, and automate moderation processes. These steps are designed to make the community more open to new participants and increase platform usage frequency.

### Removing Entry Barriers

One of the key changes will be a review of the restrictions on content publication. In the future, community moderators will be able to waive requirements regarding account age and the amount of 'karma' — an internal reputation currency that users earn through likes (upvotes) on their posts.

Historically, the 'karma' system was used as a filter against bots and spammers. However, over time, it has become a serious obstacle for newcomers: new users often could not participate in discussions until they accumulated a sufficient amount of reputation points. New anti-abuse tools will allow moderators to rely on more advanced algorithms rather than outdated metrics.

### Artificial Intelligence to Assist Moderators

Reddit is actively implementing AI-based tools to assist moderators. In particular, the testing of the **Rules Hub** system is being expanded. This tool helps community administrators determine which rules should be applied automatically and what response measures need to be taken when they are violated.

Currently, more than 700 communities use this tool. It is already available in beta for all new communities, and full implementation for all platform users is planned by the end of this year. This should significantly reduce the workload on human moderators and speed up the response to violations.

### Updating 'Old Reddit' and Business Goals

In addition to moderation, changes will affect the technical side of the platform. The company announced the migration of moderator workflows to a new system and made changes to the classic desktop version of the site, known as 'Old Reddit'.

During a meeting following the financial report, Reddit executives voiced an ambitious goal: to turn 500 million weekly active users into daily ones. This indicates that the platform is betting on audience retention and increased engagement.

### Financial Success

The backdrop for these changes is the company's successful financial position. In the second quarter, Reddit increased its revenue to $805 million, exceeding analyst expectations. This revenue growth provides the company with resources to invest in technology and infrastructure development.
