In Israel, the transition of power in the country's main intelligence agency has been officially formalized. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Roman Hoffman as the new director of the "Mossad." Hoffman became the 14th head of the intelligence service, replacing David Barnea, whose tenure ended following a series of legal proceedings.

### Fateful Court Decision

Hoffman's path to the chair of the intelligence chief was not easy. Since his candidacy was put forward in December 2025, the appointment was accompanied by prolonged legal disputes. The plaintiff and public organizations attempted to block Hoffman's assumption of office, citing past episodes from his career.

A key factor for critics was the history of the Israel Defense Forces' information operation in 2022. Hoffman was accused of violations during the conduct of an influence campaign via the Telegram messenger. Skeptics argued that such actions do not meet the ethical requirements for high-ranking officials.

However, on the eve of the event, the Israeli Supreme Court of Justice issued a final ruling. The judges, by a majority vote, rejected the complaints, ruling that the violations did not constitute intentional deception. This decision paved the way for Hoffman's official assumption of office.

### Priorities of the New Intelligence Service

During the appointment ceremony, Benjamin Netanyahu outlined strategic tasks for the new leadership. The Prime Minister named countering Iran as the top priority. Netanyahu stated that Israel will not allow Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons.

"This regime of terror, whose share is to disappear from the light — and we will help it achieve this goal — will no longer threaten us with nuclear bombs and thousands of deadly ballistic missiles," emphasized the Israeli leader.

Roman Hoffman himself, in his speech, confirmed the course of a hard line. He noted that Israel's operations against Iran and associated groups have already significantly changed the balance of power in the Middle East. According to the new director, the results achieved are an important stage, but the work is not yet finished. The "Mossad" will continue to carry out tasks to neutralize threats to the state's security.

### The Path to the Top of Intelligence

Roman Hoffman is from Belarus. In 1990, at the age of 14, he immigrated to Israel with his family. His career in the country's security system began in the Armored Corps of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), where he rose from an officer to a division commander.

Later, Hoffman held a number of leadership positions outside combat units. Immediately before his appointment as director of the "Mossad," he served as the military secretary to the Prime Minister of Israel. Now he heads one of the key intelligence agencies responsible for foreign intelligence and conducting special operations abroad.

### Regional Context

The appointment of the new head of intelligence comes against the backdrop of an escalation in the region. Iran has officially announced the suspension of negotiations with the United States. In Tehran, it was stated that further consultations are postponed due to the intensification of hostilities in Lebanon and the resulting tension in the Middle East.
