The issue of maritime drone safety is escalating in the Black Sea. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Mișcuță has voiced a strict demand to the Ukrainian side: all maritime drones operating in the area must be programmed to automatically self-destruct upon approaching Romanian territorial waters.

### Technical solution to prevent incidents

During a television interview broadcast by Defense Romania, Mișcuță proposed a specific course of action. According to him, the controllers managing the drones must establish a special safety protocol. If a drone loses connection or control, it should not drift towards the shores of neutral countries.

"If you suddenly lose them in the Black Sea, when they approach Romanian territorial waters within a distance of 12 nautical miles, the controller must program it for automatic self-destruction," the minister stated.

Bucharest intends to officially offer Kyiv the implementation of this mechanism for all maritime drones launched in the Black Sea. Mișcuță emphasized that, despite the fierce war Ukraine is waging against Russia, neighbors must guarantee the safety of the Romanian coastal zone.

### The trigger was an incident in Constanța

The diplomatic request and stern statements were a reaction to a recent incident. On June 5, an explosion of a Ukrainian surface drone occurred in the port of Constanța, which had washed up against the pier. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no casualties or injuries.

The Ukrainian Naval Forces confirmed the drone's affiliation with Ukraine. According to Kyiv, the drone lost control due to the influence of Russian electronic warfare systems and ended up on the shores of Romania. Furthermore, media reports stated that four additional boats with explosives were found in the coastal zone of Constanța port, which only heightened the tension in the region.
