# Romantic Traps: How Russian Intelligence Services Hunt Ukrainian Soldiers

In the conditions of modern warfare, methods of struggle go far beyond traditional combat operations. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has warned about the systematic use of "honeypot" tactics by Russian intelligence services to eliminate members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the agency, over the last seven months, more than 50 assassination attempts organized under the guise of romantic dates have been prevented.

### The Mechanics of the "Honeypot"

The essence of the method lies in creating an illusion of romantic interest. Russian agents create fake accounts on dating sites and in thematic chat groups on messengers, ingratiating themselves with Ukrainian soldiers. The goal is to lure military personnel to pre-arranged meetings where the attacks take place.

The enemy's arsenal includes not only physical attacks but also chemical methods. The SBU notes cases involving improvised explosive devices and lethal poisons synthesized from narcotic, psychotropic, and other chemical substances.

### Case Studies: From Poisons to Stabbings

One of the most illustrative episodes was a case in the Kharkiv region, recorded in March 2025. Law enforcement officers detained an FSB agent who, posing as a volunteer, handed food and medicine to a serviceman, having previously poisoned them.

Another case demonstrates the use of digital technology for murder. A Russian agent sent a Ukrainian soldier a bottle of drink into which a lethal dose of methadone had been added. The suspect offered the soldier to drink this "gift" during an online video date, counting on him to take this step live on stream.

Particular cruelty was shown by the organizers of attacks in industrial zones. Russian intelligence services lured Ukrainian soldiers under the pretext of meeting a girl from a dating site. Instead of the expected lady, a killer in a balaclava arrived at the location and attacked the victim from behind. In one of the recorded cases, the attacker inflicted six stab wounds to the soldier's vital organs — the neck, chest, abdomen, and right leg. The aggressor was detained, and the women who, on the orders of the FSB, corresponded with the soldiers and organized these meetings were also identified.

### SBU Warning and Context of Events

Against the backdrop of a rise in such incidents, the SBU calls on the warriors of the Armed Forces of Ukraine not to lose vigilance, noting that the enemy is becoming increasingly treacherous. The operational situation requires increased caution even in matters of personal life and communication on the internet.

These events are taking place against the backdrop of intensified counterintelligence work. Recently, the SBU detained Russian agents who staged a double terrorist attack in Odesa. In addition, the agency has undergone large-scale personnel reshuffles initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, indicating a desire to optimize the work of intelligence services under new threat conditions.
