# Rules for transporting animals in trains in Ukraine: new UZ standards for pets

Passengers planning to travel with pets must be aware of the carrier's current requirements. In Ukraine, there are clear regulations for transporting pets on domestic trains, which depend on the animal's size, breed, and carriage type. The official rules of 'Ukrzaliznytsia' establish strict criteria to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.

### Requirements for transporting small animals

Passengers are allowed to take cats, small breed dogs, or cage birds into carriages of any category. The main condition is that the animal must not pose a threat to others and must be in special transport containers. These can be cages, containers, bags, or backpacks with a waterproof absorbent bottom.

For owners of small dogs who wish to travel without a carrier in carriages with sleeping berths, special conditions apply. In this case, it is necessary to purchase all unoccupied seats in the compartment at full price.

### Strict norms for large and dangerous breeds

For large dogs (over 45 cm at the withers), as well as breeds recognized by the Cabinet of Ministers as dangerous, the rules are significantly stricter. Such animals must be on a leash and wear a muzzle. This requirement is aimed at minimizing risks for other passengers and train staff.

### Special conditions for service dogs

Separate rules apply to guide dogs assisting people with disabilities, as well as service dogs for military personnel. This regulation is in effect during martial law and for 180 days after its cancellation.

Transportation of such dogs is carried out in carriages and trains of all categories without additional payment. The animal must have a leash and a muzzle (with the exception of small breed guide dogs) and must remain next to the passenger at all times.

### Documentation and payment

For any domestic animal, a properly completed veterinary document is mandatory. A ticket for the pet is issued via a baggage receipt. The fee is calculated for each animal or place according to the baggage transport tariff for a minimum of 20 kg.

The owner is also obliged to strictly observe sanitary and hygiene norms and clean up after the animal if necessary. This requirement applies to all passengers traveling with pets.

### Additional conveniences for passengers

To facilitate parents and children, 'Ukrzaliznytsia' is planned to increase the number of children's carriages in the summer schedule. Specially equipped rolling stock provides special conditions for travel and entertainment for toddlers.

In particular, new domestically produced carriages with additional conveniences for passengers have recently appeared on railway routes to Uzhhorod and Dnipro. The carrier has launched three more such specialized carriages into service.

However, passengers should note that the rules for free travel for children differ — age restrictions for domestic routes within Ukraine and for international trips are different.
