# A play instead of rescue: how Russian propaganda used a child for a fake story

The story of the "miraculous rescue" of a ten-year-old girl from a basement in Konstantinovka, actively broadcast by Russian state media, turned out to be a cynical information manipulation. The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under the President of Ukraine exposed this narrative, proving that it was completely fabricated by the occupation authorities to create a false narrative.

### Exposing the fake evacuation

Russian propagandists, including the Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova, told the world how Russian military forces allegedly just evacuated 10-year-old Sofia from a frontline zone. According to their version, the child had been hiding in a basement for almost a month until "rescuers" found her. In the released interviews, the girl voiced anti-Ukrainian theses which, according to experts, cannot be formed independently at such a young age.

However, analysts of the presidential initiative "Bring Kids Back" refuted this version by analyzing open-source data. The investigation showed that a girl with an identical appearance was photographed in a social rehabilitation center in the occupied Shakhtersk as early as June 5, 2026.

This means that a month before the release of the propaganda story, the child was already under the full control of Russian occupiers. Instead of searching for relatives and returning home, Russia held the girl specifically for filming, deliberately concealing her whereabouts.

### Information diversion and distraction

The main goal of this campaign is to urgently shift the attention of the international community. The simultaneous release of the story about Sofia was timed to coincide with the presentation of the report by the OSCE Moscow Mechanism on July 9, 2026. This document officially recorded for the first time that forced assimilation, militarization, and indoctrination of Ukrainian children are a systematic state policy of Russia, which can be classified as a crime against humanity.

The creation of the image of a "savior" allowed the Kremlin to try to neutralize the resonance of the international investigation, which confirmed large-scale violations of children's rights.

### Systemic militarization and Russification

The case in Konstantinovka is just part of a broader picture. Russian occupation administrations actively use educational institutions to pressure the population. In particular, the last school bells were turned into a platform for military agitation, and on temporarily occupied territories, the selection of graduates for Russian army UAV units has begun.

Furthermore, a large-scale campaign to eradicate Ukrainian identity continues. The process of systemic Russification, which began in schools and universities, has spread to kindergartens. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia is investing huge resources in such propaganda and disinformation, trying to maintain its influence in Europe and the world through hybrid warfare methods.
