For several years, foldable smartphones have been battling one major issue that deters conservative users: the visible crease on the screen. However, Samsung seems to have found a way to solve this problem once and for all. The company is testing a new display technology that should make a foldable smartphone visually and tactilely indistinguishable from a monolithic device.

### CTG Technology: Etching Instead of Polishing

Until now, the industry has relied on Ultra-thin Glass (UTG). Its main drawback was its uniform thickness across the entire panel, creating a physical barrier when folding. Samsung's new concept, dubbed CTG (Center-etched Thin Glass), proposes a radically different approach: selective thinning of the material.

As the name suggests, the technology involves 'etching' or engraving the glass in the central part. This allows for a natural curve without accumulating critical stress in the material, which in turn slows down screen deformation over time.

### Three Pillars of the New Design

The development aims to solve a complex of problems engineers faced when creating previous generations of Galaxy Fold and Flip. The innovation is based on three key principles:

- **Natural Curve and Stress Protection:** The thinned central section allows the screen to fold more gently, minimizing stress on the glass structure.

- **Lightweight and Rigid:** Maintaining thicker glass at the panel edges ensures display rigidity when unfolded. This gives engineers the freedom to create thinner and lighter bodies without sacrificing the overall durability of the gadget.

- **Special Fillers:** To ensure users do not feel the transition from the thick part to the thin part with their fingers, Samsung Display is developing special leveling fillers. They provide the feel and look of a single piece of glass.

### Competition with Apple and Release Dates

Samsung's haste in development is driven not only by the desire to improve its own product but also by intensifying competition. According to insiders, Apple is actively preparing to release its own foldable iPhone, which will also utilize the latest technologies to minimize bending. Instead of simply improving the hinge mechanism, Samsung plans to respond to its competitor with a fundamental rethinking of the glass structure itself.

The release of the first devices with CTG technology is scheduled for 2027, and they are expected to enter the Galaxy Fold 9 series lineup. However, sources note that the company is still resolving technical nuances, specifically achieving a perfectly flat screen surface when unfolded.

In the initial stages, the new glass may be used only in specific modifications of the series. It is currently unknown whether both models—the vertical Flip 9 and the horizontal Fold 9—will be updated immediately. More details about production specifications are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
