On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Donetsk's Shakhtar resumes its European campaign following the international break. This step is necessitated by the current realities of Ukrainian clubs in European competitions, forcing them to host opponents on neutral fields.

### Tournament Standing and Team Preparation

In the updated Champions League table, both teams approach this head-to-head encounter occupying positions within the playoff qualification zone. Following the opening round, Shakhtar sits in 22nd place thanks to an away draw against PSV, while the Greek side secured a narrow victory over Austria's LASK and occupies 17th place. Both rivals approach the upcoming match on a high note in their domestic leagues: the Donbas team confidently defeated Veres, and AEK coped with OFI, with both matches ending in identical 3-0 victories.

### Refereeing Crew and the Crucial Zubkov Factor

Officiating this crucial match is entrusted to English referee Chris Kavanagh, assisted on the lines by compatriots Dan Cook and Ian Hussin, with Sam Barrott serving as the fourth official. Special attention from Ukrainian fans is focused on winger Oleksandr Zubkov. For him, this match carries a special significance as he is a product of the Donetsk football school and is now facing his boyhood club on the international stage.

### Head-to-Head History and Where to Watch the Broadcast

Previously, Shakhtar and AEK crossed paths only once in a friendly match back in 2023, when the Greeks celebrated a crushing 5:0 victory. In official matches, AEK will become the fourth Greek representative in Shakhtar's European history following PAOK, Olympiacos, and Panathinaikos. The live broadcast of the match will be available on the Megogo OTT platform under the "Sport" subscription, preceded by an analytical studio featuring experts Oleksandr Golovko and Oleh Masliuk.
