# Shield in the Sky: Why Patriot is Irreplaceable for Ukraine and Who Can Replace It

In the conditions of modern warfare, where airspace becomes a battlefield no less important than the land, air defense systems play a decisive role. One of the key such systems for Ukraine has become the American Patriot surface-to-air missile system. But what lies behind this loud name and why is it considered the 'last line' of defense?

### Technological superiority: how Patriot works

The Patriot complex is a mobile surface-to-air system created by Raytheon Technologies. It doesn't just shoot at planes; it is a high-precision tool capable of intercepting tactical ballistic missiles and cruise munitions. A Patriot battery is a complex organism including radars, command posts, generators, and launchers.

The main feature of the system is its radar. It is capable of detecting targets at a distance of more than 150 km. Moreover, Patriot is integrated into the NATO AWACS system and has communication channels with US military satellites. This allows the system to 'see' ballistic missile launches even on enemy territory, which gives critically important reaction time.

### Variety of munitions and tactics of use

The effectiveness of Patriot depends directly on the type of interceptor missiles used. There are two main families:

    - **PAC-2:** A classic missile with a fragmentation warhead that explodes in close proximity to the target, destroying it with fragments.

    - **PAC-3:** A modern missile using hit-to-kill technology. It does not explode but physically rams the target, making it ideal for intercepting ballistic missiles at altitudes up to 24 km.

It was the PAC-3 modification that was supplied to Ukraine. It is capable of simultaneously tracking up to 50 targets and destroying 5 of them. This makes the system a formidable opponent for Russian Kh-101 cruise missiles, 'Kalibr' and 'Iskander' ballistic missiles.

### The price of the issue and the history of deliveries

Patriot's power comes at a price. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), one new battery costs more than $1 billion. At the same time, the cost of one interceptor missile is estimated at $4 million. Deliveries to Ukraine became the result of a long political process: from initial US concerns about conflict escalation to an official decision at the end of 2022, supported by Germany.

### Is there an alternative?

Aerospace expert Konstantin Krivolap emphasizes the uniqueness of Patriot for Ukraine. It is the only system capable of effectively intercepting ballistic missiles at long distances. Other complexes, for example, the French SAMP-T, cope well with cruise missiles, but lose in the fight against ballistics.

However, 'Patriot' has competitors. Experts mention the Israeli-American 'Iron Dome' complex (in the context of ground-based deployment, 'David's Sling' is often mentioned). In some characteristics, it even surpasses Patriot, while its cost and missile price can be three times lower. Nevertheless, at the moment, Patriot remains the gold standard for protecting the Ukrainian sky.
