The political map of Serbia has undergone unexpected changes. The country's President, Aleksandar Vučić, has officially announced his decision to leave the highest state office in the coming weeks. Along with this, the leader has announced the holding of early presidential and parliamentary elections.

The statement was made on June 27, 2026. Vučić spoke to supporters at a pro-government rally in Belgrade, where he stated directly: "I will be president for only a few more weeks, and then I will resign".

### Political Carousel: From President to Prime Minister

The decision to change status did not come out of nowhere. Back in late May 2026, during a visit to China, the Serbian leader publicly hinted at a possible resignation for the first time, linking it to the approaching end of his term. At that time, mass protests were taking place in the country, which Vučić at that moment called "empty".

However, in the first half of June 2026, the head of state clarified his intentions on the air of "Radio Belgrade". It turned out that leaving the post of president is just the first step. Vučić intends to resign in order to head the government. He is considering the possibility of running for the post of Prime Minister and emphasized that this process could happen much faster than society expected.

### The Background for the Political Move: Tragedy and Protests

The decision to change power is being made against the backdrop of growing internal tension in Serbia. Street protests demanding the resignation of the current leadership are not subsiding in the country. In particular, new actions recently flared up in the city of Novi Sad.

The catalyst for the protesters was a tragedy at the railway station, where a canopy collapsed. As a result of the incident, 16 people died. The opposition and protest participants accused the ruling Serbian Progressive Party of systemic corruption and ineffective management of the country, which, in their opinion, led to such disasters.
