# Shock in football: Germany and the Netherlands exit the 2026 World Cup after penalty shootout failures

The 2026 World Cup has delivered a true shock to football fans: two giants of European sport — Germany and the Netherlands — have exited the tournament at the Round of 16 stage. Both favorites failed to survive the nerve test in penalty shootouts, losing to teams that were not previously considered the main contenders for the trophy.

### Germany loses to Paraguay: a historic defeat

The German national team, traditionally one of the strongest in the world, sensationally ended their World Cup campaign by losing to Paraguay. The match turned into a real drama: regular and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw.

The encounter began with a goal by Paraguayan Julio Enciso, scored at the end of the first half. The Germans responded with a precise strike by Kai Havertz in the 54th minute, restoring balance. However, in extra time, the referee, with the help of VAR, disallowed a goal by German Jonathan Tah, which became the turning point. In the penalty shootout, luck smiled on the South Americans — 4-3. The fatal miss was made by the same Tah, who had previously been denied a goal.

This defeat was historic for Germany: for the first time in history, the team lost a penalty shootout at the World Cup. Until now, the Bundesteam had won all four of their shootouts. This is only the second such defeat for the Germans in major tournaments since the 1976 Euro final against Czechoslovakia.

Paraguay, meanwhile, has reached the Round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time in 16 years. Their next opponent will be the winner of the France – Sweden tie.

### The Netherlands lose to Morocco: another disappointment

Following the Germans, the Netherlands national team also left the World Cup, failing to hold on to victory over the stubborn Moroccan team in Monterrey, Mexico. The "Oranje" took the lead in the 72nd minute thanks to a goal by Cody Gakpo. However, Ronald Koeman's side conceded in response during stoppage time from Issa Diop.

The score remained unchanged in extra time, and the fate of the match was decided in a penalty shootout. The Moroccans proved to have stronger nerves — 3-2. Dutch players Timber, Klaassen, and Summerville missed their attempts, while the decisive kick was converted by Sabiri.

Thanks to this victory, the Moroccan national team advances to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they will meet the Canadian team — this is the first officially formed pair for the next stage of the tournament.

### Round results: Brazil knocks out Japan

Earlier, it was reported that Brazil knocked Japan out of the 2026 World Cup in the final seconds. Thus, several pairs for the Round of 16 have already been determined, and the tournament promises to be even more unpredictable.
