The British government has been left with a difficult choice after John Giley unexpectedly resigned from his post as Defence Secretary. The cause was a fierce controversy surrounding army funding. This decision came as a genuine shock to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's team, as Giley was considered one of the most reliable allies.

### Crisis of Trust and the Question of Money

John Giley had a reputation as a politician who never caused public problems. He successfully led the department during periods of international chaos, ensuring stable support for Ukraine in the war against Russia and coordinating Britain's actions during the escalation of the conflict between the US and Iran.

However, it was the financial issue that became the stumbling block. Giley criticized the Treasury and resigned, accusing Starmer's government of failing to provide the necessary funds to address growing security threats. Earlier, the Prime Minister himself had stated that the country must urgently increase defense investments, as intelligence warns of a possible Russian attack on NATO countries in the near future.

### Candidates for Replacement: Who Will Lead the Ministry of Defence?

Now Keir Starmer must find someone capable of balancing the interests of the army and a tight budget. Four main candidates are in the sights of the political establishment, each carrying their own risks and advantages.

**El Carns** — the main contender and a "man of action." The current Minister for the Armed Forces has an impressive biography: a former Marine, five rotations in Afghanistan, awarded the Military Cross for bravery. Last year he climbed Mount Everest to raise more than £1 million for veterans. Carns is popular among Labour MPs, but he has also expressed doubts about the current defense investment plan. After Giley's resignation, he wrote on social media X that the current financial plan "does not fit its purpose." This position could become an obstacle to his appointment.

**Douglas Alexander** — the Scottish Secretary, an experienced politician who has already served in the Cabinet during the previous Labour government. He is considered a reliable and predictable partner, which could be important during an unstable period.

**Luke Pollard** — son of a Royal Navy submariner, responsible for the defense industry and troop readiness. He deeply understands the internal problems of the department, which will help calm the military during unsettled times.

**Heidi Alexander** — an official with a known rapid career. Returning to Parliament only in 2024, she is already working in the Cabinet. Previously, she was Deputy Mayor of London. Heidi is considered extremely capable, and importantly for Starmer, she remains loyal to him.

### Political Consequences

The choice of a new Defence Secretary will become a litmus test for British politics. This decision will show the true level of support for the Prime Minister among MPs and determine Britain's future course in security and arms spending.
