On Wednesday evening, June 17, a tense situation unfolded in the sky over the Black Sea. A passenger airliner of the Russian airline Smartavia, flying a flight from Sochi to Arkhangelsk, sent a distress signal and briefly disappeared from the controllers' screens. However, the pilots managed to safely return the aircraft to the ground.

### Code 7700 and disappearance from radars

The Boeing 737-800 departed from Sochi airport and, while over the Black Sea, transmitted code 7700 to air traffic control. In aviation, this three-digit code is a universal signal of an emergency on board. Immediately after transmitting the signal, the aircraft disappeared from the radars, causing serious concern.

The airliner reappeared on the monitors after some time. According to media reports, the crew performed a maneuver to burn off fuel in order to reduce the weight of the aircraft before the planned landing. This was likely a necessary step to ensure safety during an emergency descent.

### Successful return and cause of the incident

By 23:30 Moscow time, it became known that the flight had ended safely: the plane made an emergency landing at its departure airport — Sochi. Preliminary data suggests that the cause of the alarm system activation was the failure of one of the engines.

Fortunately, the incident resulted in no casualties. As reported by Russian media, there were no injuries during the emergency landing. Passengers and crew were evacuated and provided with necessary assistance.
