# The AI in Games Myth Debunked: Steam Data Shows Neural Networks Do Not Generate Profit

The gaming industry is experiencing a real boom, and it seems artificial intelligence should be the main driver of this growth. However, a large-scale study based on the analysis of more than 53,000 games on Steam over three years paints a completely different picture. Despite the explosive growth in the number of releases tagged with AI usage — from 10% in 2024 to almost 31% in 2026 — such projects rarely bring profit to developers.

### The Paradox of Growth and Losses

The statistics are relentless: the presence of neural networks in a developer's toolkit does not guarantee commercial success. On the contrary, games with an "AI label" often sell even worse than ordinary new releases. This observation confirms a fundamental pattern of the entire industry: about 94% of revenue is taken by just one percent of the most successful titles. The rest of the projects, regardless of the technologies they are built on, remain in the shadows.

### Why Technology Does Not Save Small Business

The reason lies in the market structure. Most projects using AI are created by small studios that already face colossal competition. Neural networks have not yet become a "magic pill" capable of replacing human labor, creativity, and years of painstaking development. True hits using AI require serious investments of time and resources, not just content generation.

### Technology vs. Quality

The conclusion of the study is simple and sobering: technology helps saturate the market with new releases, but it is still unable to replace a professional approach to creating quality games. For players, this means that the "AI" label on the cover should be neither a sign of quality nor a reason for skepticism — the success of a game still depends on the talent of the creators, not on algorithms.
