# Stolypin's Ashes in Kyiv: Why the Reformer's Remains Will Stay in the Lavra Until the End of the War

The question regarding the fate of the burial site of one of the most influential Prime Ministers of the Russian Empire, Pyotr Stolypin, has received an unexpected development. There are no plans for exhumation or the relocation of the politician's ashes on the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra until the complete conclusion of the current armed conflict. This was officially stated by the Director of the National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra", Maksym Ostapenko, during a meeting with media representatives.

The decision to maintain the existing status of the burial site was not made spontaneously. According to the head of the reserve, the topic had been discussed previously; however, under current geopolitical conditions, priority is given to preserving the peace of this historical figure. Ostapenko emphasized that the issue was considered in the context of respect for the Stolypin family's position, which is pro-Ukrainian.

The key factor influencing the final decision was an official appeal submitted to the leadership of Ukraine in 2023. The initiator was one of the reformer's descendants — Pyotr Stolypin's great-grandson. In his letter, the relative argued against exhumation, emphasizing the historical role of his ancestor as a statesman who attempted to reform the Russian Empire.

"In '23, the great-grandson... who holds a pro-Ukrainian position, appealed to the President of Ukraine and presented his arguments asking not to disturb Stolypin," Ostapenko quoted the essence of the appeal. The relative emphasized that the burial site should be viewed as a monument, and under the conditions of the ongoing war, it is better not to disturb it. This position was accepted by the reserve administration as decisive.

Currently, an unwritten consensus exists within the National Reserve: the burial site remains untouched. This decision is dictated not only by respect for the family's will but also by the desire to avoid additional provocations during a difficult period for the country. Thus, Stolypin's ashes will rest in Kyiv until hostilities cease.
