# Stress test for the EU: Germany admits success in Ceuta but calls for total border defense

The situation at the border of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has become an unprecedented test for the European Union. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefuhl, in an exclusive interview with Bild am Sonntag, admitted that Europe withstood the onslaught, but the price of this success proved too high. According to the minister, the crisis exposed critical vulnerabilities in the security system, and Brussels now faces a fundamental need to revise its strategy for protecting external borders.

### "Absolute stress test" and the threat to Schengen

Wadefuhl did not hide the scale of the shock, calling the events of recent days an "absolute stress test that we withstood." However, behind the words of victory lies a worrying warning: the German diplomat demanded that the European Commission make border security an "absolute priority." In his view, any further negligence could lead to the collapse of the Schengen Area — the system of open internal borders that serves as the foundation of European integration.

Berlin has clearly outlined the conditions for the system's survival: controlling illegal migration is impossible without strict partnership with third countries. As a key example, Wadefuhl cited Morocco, which promptly agreed to take back tens of thousands of illegal migrants, demonstrating a willingness to cooperate.

### Catastrophic figures and a rift within the bloc

The German minister's optimism contrasts with the real figures of the tragedy. Within two days, between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants broke into Ceuta. Madrid was forced to deploy the regular army to the enclave for the first time since 2021 to hold back the crowd. The tragedy also affected the sea: the official death toll stands at 67 people during the attempted crossing.

This massive breach has triggered a deep political crisis within the EU. Italy, outraged by Spain's actions, unilaterally closed its air and sea borders with Madrid, effectively suspending the Schengen Agreement. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused Spain's left-wing government of weakness, and her tough stance has already been supported by Finland.

### Ultimatum from 22 countries and an emergency summit

To prevent the final disintegration of unity, Berlin and Rome led a coalition of 22 member states. Leaders of the countries, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, signed a stern collective letter addressed to the EU leadership. Under pressure from this coalition, Ireland, which holds the EU presidency, urgently convened an extraordinary meeting of interior ministers for Tuesday, August 4.

On the agenda is the development of a common defensive doctrine, the fight against smugglers, and emergency funding for the Frontex agency. For Europe, this is not just a reaction to an incident, but an attempt to prevent a systemic collapse in the face of migration blackmail.
