# Strike on Odesa: Casualties among sailors, damage to port infrastructure, and attack on rescuers

On Saturday, July 18, the Odesa region became the target of a massive attack by Russia. As a result of strikes on port infrastructure and objects in the Black Sea, there are casualties and injured. The situation remains tense: air defense forces are repelling massive raids, but the enemy manages to deliver pinpoint strikes on critically important objects.

### Casualties among the civilian population and ship crews

One of the most tragic episodes was the attack on a foreign merchant vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda in the Black Sea. As reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Kiper, one person died as a result of the attack. Three more crew members were injured and urgently hospitalized. Doctors are providing the necessary assistance to the victims.

This is not the first incident involving foreign vessels in this region. Late in the evening of July 17, Russian troops launched a missile strike on a vessel flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, which was in the port of Odesa. Then, too, crew members were injured, which indicates the systematic nature of the threats to shipping in the Black Sea.

### Damage to infrastructure and secondary attack on rescuers

In addition to ships, key port infrastructure objects were hit: buildings, tanks, and warehouses. There is currently no information about additional casualties among port personnel, but the scale of the damage requires a detailed assessment.

Particularly alarming is the fact that during the liquidation of the consequences of one of the attacks, Russian forces launched a second strike. As a result, special rescue equipment was damaged. Fortunately, the personnel were in shelter, so none of the rescuers were injured. However, the very fact of the attack on equipment engaged in humanitarian and emergency work raises serious questions about compliance with international humanitarian law.

### Scale of the night attack and air defense effectiveness

On the night of July 18, Russia launched 7 missiles and 90 strike drones at Ukraine. The main direction of the strike is the Odesa region. Air defense forces managed to shoot down most of the hostile targets, but some of them reached their targets.

According to Ukrainian authorities, missile hits and 19 strike drones were recorded at 19 different locations. Also, debris from shot-down drones and missiles was found at 5 locations. This speaks to the high intensity of the attack and the significant load on air defense systems, which operate in a round-the-clock counteraction mode.

### Consequences and prospects

Attacks on port infrastructure and ships in the Black Sea create serious risks for international trade and logistics. Damage to warehouses and tanks could lead to disruptions in the supply of grain and other goods, which is already causing concern at the global level.

At the same time, Ukraine continues to demonstrate the ability to repel massive strikes, despite the enemy's numerical superiority. However, each new incident reminds us that war has no borders — even in peaceful ports and on international waters.
