# Strike on the 'shadow fleet': how Sea Baby hit a Russian tanker off the coast of Crimea

On the morning of July 8, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out a successful special operation in the Black Sea. During the operation, the Sea Baby maritime unmanned surface vehicle struck the Russian tanker Blue, which is part of the so-called Russian 'shadow fleet'.

### Attack details and location

According to intelligence services, at the time of the attack, the vessel was in close proximity to the temporarily occupied Yalta. The strike was delivered within Ukraine's exclusive economic zone. The Sea Baby drone hit the stern of the tanker, causing serious damage to the vessel.

During the operation, Russian aviation attempted to intercept and destroy the maritime drone, but these attempts were unsuccessful. The attack confirmed the effectiveness of using maritime unmanned vehicles to strike large targets in open waters.

### Vessel status and economic context

The damaged tanker Blue belongs to the Suezmax class — these are large sea vessels designed for transporting significant volumes of oil and petroleum products. The vessel is under sanctions for transporting Russian oil.

It is with the help of such tankers that Russia circumvents international restrictions and generates billions in revenue, which is directed toward financing the war against Ukraine. Experts and SBU representatives emphasize that every successful strike on such targets directly affects the financial stability of the aggressor.

### Legal basis and strategy

The SBU stated that from the perspective of international law, as well as the laws and customs of war, such vessels are absolutely legitimate military targets. Attacks on the 'shadow fleet' pursue several objectives:

- Reducing the Kremlin's oil revenues.

- Increasing the cost of Russian military logistics.

- Weakening Russia's financial foundation for continuing the aggression.

### Systemic nature of operations

The attack on the tanker Blue is not an isolated incident. Ukraine's defense forces had already struck another tanker of Russia's 'shadow fleet' in the Black Sea on June 17. That vessel was also under sanctions from the EU, Switzerland, the UK, Canada, and Ukraine.

On the night of July 6, the SBU, together with other units of the Defense Forces, carried out a large-scale series of attacks, striking oil refineries, fuel terminals, and military facilities both within Russia and in occupied Crimea. These actions demonstrate a systematic approach to undermining the enemy's economic potential.
