# Su-35 on the Eastern Front: How the Ukrainian Air Force Used 'Ambush' Tactics Against a Thrust-Vectoring Fighter

On July 8, 2026, an incident occurred on the eastern front of the conflict that has already become the subject of detailed analysis within the expert community. The Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine officially confirmed the destruction of a Russian Su-35 multirole fighter jet. The loss was recorded during daylight hours, and later units of the Third Army Corps published video evidence: footage showing the smoldering wreckage of the aircraft within the area of responsibility of Ukrainian forces. The situation was also confirmed by specialized monitoring channels associated with the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The event attracted attention not only due to the destruction of an expensive fourth-generation fighter jet but also due to the alleged tactics used to intercept it. On the air of the analytical program Radio NV, retired Major Alexey Hetman put forward a hypothesis regarding the use of the so-called "anti-air ambush".

### The Mechanics of the SAMbush Tactic: How to Hunt Highly Maneuverable Targets

According to the analyst's assessment, a battery of the MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile system could have been deployed to guarantee the destruction of the Su-35 at long distances. The key element of success was the methodology of mobile ambushes, known in military terminology as SAMbush (from the English SAM — surface-to-air missile, ambush — ambush).

The essence of the method lies in the covert deployment of launchers in close proximity to the line of contact. At the same time, the air defense calculation does not include active all-around radar stations, which could reveal the battery's position to the enemy.

Target designation is carried out via secure data transmission channels (Link 16) from remote NATO detection systems or passive radio-electronic means. This allows the activation of the own target illumination radar only at the final stage of the missile's flight trajectory. As a result, the time available to the pilot to perform a defensive maneuver is reduced to a minimum.

### Tactical and Technical Significance of the Su-35 Loss

The Su-35 fighter jet (NATO reporting name — Flanker-E) is one of the key elements of the Russian Air Force, designed to achieve air superiority. The aircraft is equipped with the "Irbis" radar control system and engines with thrust vectoring control, which provides it with exceptional maneuverability.

Key characteristics of the aircraft:

- Maximum flight speed: 2500 km/h (at altitude).

- Maximum combat load: 8000 kg.

- Maximum target detection range of the "Irbis" radar: up to 400 km.

- Crew: 1 person.

The loss of a unit of this type of equipment has direct operational and tactical consequences. The Su-35 is traditionally used to cover front-line Su-34 bombers, which drop guided aerial bombs (GABs) with folding glide and correction modules (UMPK). Operations are conducted beyond the range of medium-range air defense systems.

The destruction of the escort fighter forces Russian forces to reconsider the radius of aviation operations on the eastern front, which directly correlates with an increase in the risk of detection by mobile air defense groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Official notification of such results of fire suppression is carried out within the framework of the Law of Ukraine "On the Legal Regime of Martial Law" and is within the exclusive competence of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
