Security of trade routes in the Black Sea has been threatened at an unprecedented level. On the night of August 1, 2026, Ukrainian maritime drones carried out a daring attack, destroying the large Russian container ship "Yanina" in neutral waters, 130 miles from Novorossiysk. The incident, confirmed by both sides of the conflict, shocked the logistics community and provoked a sharp reaction from Rosatom leadership.

### Attack on the open sea: operation details

According to operational data, around 22:00 Moscow time, two Ukrainian unmanned boats (UBs) attacked the cargo ship "Yanina" (IMO 9301304). The vessel, belonging to the FESCO transport group, which is part of the state corporation "Rosatom," sustained critical damage. The container ship, carrying civilian cargo — frozen food products, construction and finishing materials — began to take on water rapidly and soon sank.

The peculiarity of the incident lies in the distance of the attack site from the shore. The attack took place in international waters, making it a classic example of asymmetric naval warfare, where the boundaries of hostilities blur, and economic arteries become targets.

### Miracle of salvation: 17 people survived

Despite the tragedy with the vessel, human casualties were avoided. There were 17 crew members on board, and all were rescued during a complex night operation. The captain of the "Yanina" gave the order to evacuate, and the sailors moved to life rafts.

The rescue operation became an example of international maritime brotherhood. The crew of the Egyptian bulk carrier "Delphinus," which was sailing nearby, was the first to respond to the SOS signal. Despite the risk of a repeat drone attack, the Egyptian sailors entered the disaster zone and pulled 16 Russians out of the water. The last team member, who had fallen behind the group, was discovered in the morning and brought ashore by helicopter pilots of the Russian Black Sea Fleet Naval Aviation.

### "Sea robbery": Moscow's reaction

The head of "Rosatom," Alexey Likhachev, has already made a stern statement condemning Kyiv's actions. In an official comment, the attack on a peaceful merchant vessel carrying food products was classified as "sea robbery and piracy".

Likhachev emphasized that such actions undermine confidence in the safety of maritime transport and violate norms of international law. The incident with the "Yanina" demonstrates that even the deep rear and international waters no longer guarantee safety for commercial vessels.

### Mirror response: Kyiv's strategy

Analysts link this operation to the implementation of a new Black Sea strategy coordinated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine command. The sinking of the "Yanina" is viewed as a mirror response to the actions of the Russian army. In recent weeks, Moscow has launched massive missile strikes against the ports of Greater Odesa, attacking piers and civilian vessels, which led to a boycott of Ukrainian ports by foreign shipowners.

Kyiv, having effectively lost the ability to export by sea due to the actions of Russian ballistics and missile terror, deployed unmanned systems to inflict symmetrical economic damage. The destruction of the "Rosatom" vessel in the deep rear is a signal to international insurance syndicates, in particular London's Lloyd's, that Russian trade routes from Novorossiysk are now in a zone of mortal danger.

The escalation continues: while Kyiv's actions on land and in the air are limited by sanctions and blockades from Western partners, Ukrainian unmanned boats on the sea have complete freedom of action, capable of cutting off foreign currency revenue from Russian exports.
